Questions + Answers key
Take MCQ Science Test1.
Define equilibrium state.
2.
Define irreversible reaction.
3.
Powdered calcium carbonate reacts more readily with hydrochloric acid than marble chips. Give reasons.
4.
What is called universal pH indicator?
5.
6.
7.
Define combination reaction. Give one example for an exothermic combination reaction.
8.
Why does the reaction rate of a reaction increase on raising the temperature?
9.
When an aqueous solution of potassium chloride is added to an aqueous solution of silver nitrate, a white precipitate is formed. Give the chemical equation of this reaction
10.
A strip of a metal X is immersed in the aqueous solution of salt YSO4 blue in colour. After sometime, a layer the metal Y from the salt solution is deposited on the strip of the metal X. Whereas the metal X is used for galvanisation, the metal Y is employed in making electric cables.
i) Predict the metal X.
ii) What could be the metal Y?
iii) Can you name the salt YSO4?
iv) What is the nature of the chemical reaction taking place?
1.
When the rate of the forward reaction becomes equal to the rate of backward reaction, then no more product is formed. This stage of the reaction is called 'equilibrium state'.
2.
The reaction that cannot be reversed is called irreversible reaction.
3.
(i) Greater the surface area, greater is the rate of the reaction
(ii) Powdered calcium carbonate offers large surface area for the reaction to occur at a faster rate.
4.
Universal Indicator/pH paper: It is a mixture of a number of indicators. It shows a specific colour at a given pH.
5.
6.
7.
(i) A combination reaction is a reaction in which two or more reactants combine to form a compound.
(ii) It is also called as synthesis reaction (or) composition reaction (a single product).
(iii) S(s) + O2(g) → SO2(g)
(iv) Sulphur reacts with oxygen it produce sulphur dioxide.
(v) Most of combination reactions are exothermic in nature, because they involve the formation of new bonds, which releases a huge amount of energy in the form of heat.
8.
(i) The temperature of a reaction increases, the adding heat provides energy to break more bonds of the reactant molecules.
(ii) So more reactants ions increases, produce more products.
(iii) Thus speed of the reaction increases.
9.
KCI(aq) + AgNO3(aq) ⟶ AgCl(s) ↓+ KNO3(aq)
white precipitate of AgCl is formed in aqueous solution of potassium nitrate.
10.
i) Since the metal X is used for galvanisation, it is most probably Zn.
ii) Since the metal Y is used in electric cable, it is likely to be Cu.
iii) The salt is CuSO4.
iv) It is an example of metal displacement reaction. Zn lies above Cu in the activity series and has therefore, displaced Cu from the blue CuSO solution.
