3.
Write two differences between living and non-living.
4.
What is key? How is it helpful in studying biological classification?

13.
How are living organisms divided into different taxa? What is the name given to this process?
14.

15.

1.
Plants and animals are named differently in different parts of the world. In order to avoid confusion it is universally accepted to name plants and animals in latin.
2.
Whole moong dal is living because it has seed in dormant stage. On getting conditions for germination ,it germinates and develops into plant. It also respires .Broken moong dal is non living because internal growth is absent in it.Respiration is also absent.
3.
(a) Reproduction : Living beings reproduce progeny, while non-living do not reproduce.
(b) Growth : Living beings show growth, while non-living do not grow.
4.
A key is a set of two contrasting characters out of which either of the characters is carried over to future generations for better adaptability. These keys help scientists establish the link and path towards development of a particular taxonomic category.
5.
A geographical location rich in biodiversity would have a healthier ecosystem. A rich biodiversity helps maintain the ecological balance as well.
6.
Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus and Species.
7.
Taxon is a level of hierarchy in biological classification. Example: Family is a taxa.
8.
The number of species of flora and fauna present in a given geographical location is called biodiversity.
9.
Order:
Order further zeroes down on characteristics and includes related genus. For example, humans and monkeys belong to the order Primates. Both humans and monkeys can use their hands to manipulate objects and can walk on their hind legs.
10.
Family:
(i) Family contains a group of related genera with less number of similarities as compared to genus and species.
(ii) All the genera of a family have some common or correlated features.
(iii) Let us take example of dog and fox. They are members of the same family.
11.
There are millions of living organisms in the world. Often, these organisms are known by their local names that vary from place to place, even within a country. Hence, the naming process of living organism is standardised in a way that a particular organism is known by the same name all over the world in the scientific community.
12.
Brinjal and potato both belong to same genus as they share some common correlated characters.
They belong to different species because they have
(i) different morphological features
(ii) reproductive isolation (inability to interbreed).
13.
Living organisms can be divided into different taxa based on their characteristics. This process of classification is called taxonomy.
14.
There are many organisms, which never reproduce in their life, although all other characteristic of living things are present in them, e.g., sterile worker bees, mules, infertile human couples, etc., Hence, reproduction cannot be an all-inclusive defining property of living things.
15.
The organisation in a living body produces a new functional entity, which has its own properties not found in its components. Hence, a cell organelle is the one having its own properties not found in its molecular constituents.
