Viruses are puzzle in biology. Viruses, viroids and prions are the exception to cell theory. They lack protoplasm, the essential part of the cell and exists as obligate parasites which are sub-cellular in nature.

This was invented by Zernike (1935). It is a modification of light microscope with all its basic principle. The objects observed by increasing the contrast by bringing about chanqe in amplitude of the light waves. The contrast can be increased by introducing the 'Phase Plate' in the condenser lens. Phase plate is a circular component with circular annular etching.
