Take MCQ Chemistry Test

1.
How does it become possible to cause artificial rain by spraying silver iodide on the clouds?
2.
What is meant by 'shape-selective catalysis' of reactions?
3.
What is demulsification? Name two demulsifiers.
4.
Why does physisorption decrease with the increase of temperature?
5.
(a) What happens when a freshly precipitated Fe(OH)3 is shaken with water containing a small quantity of FeCl3?
(b) Why is finely divided substance more effective as an adsorbent?
6.
Describe the following processes:
(i) Dialysis,
(ii) Electrophoresis,
(iii) Tyndall effect.
7.
What is the difference between physisorption and chemisorption?
8.
How are the following colloidals different from each other in respect of their dispersion medium and dispersed phase? Give one example of each.
(i) Aerosol
(ii) Emulsion
(iii) Hydrosol
9.
In Freundlich adsorption isotherm, the value of 1/n is
between 0 and 1 in all cases
between 2 and 4 in all cases
1 in case of physical adsorption
1 in case of chemisorption
10.
Which one of the following forms an intrinsic colloid?
Sulphur
As2S3
Fe(OH)3
Egg albumin
11.
Which of the following is true in respect of adsorption?
\(\triangle G<0,\triangle S>0,\triangle H<0\)
\(\triangle G<0,\triangle S<0,\triangle H<0\)
\(\triangle G>0,\triangle S>0,\triangle H<0\)
\(\triangle G<0,\triangle S<0,\triangle H>0\)
12.
Radha and Meera are fast friends. They both study in class XII.Radha is a student of science while Meera follows commerce stream. One day, when they were playing, Radha got hurt and started bleeding. Meera took her to house and applied some alum on the cut. The bleeding stopped immediately.
(i)Why bleeding stopped when some alum is applied on the cut?
(ii) What are the values associated with Meera's decision to take Radha to her house and apply alum on her cut?
13.
A one - litre vessel contained a gas at 27oC. 6 g of charcoal was introduced into it. The pressure of the gas fell down from 700 mm to 400 mm. Calculate the volume of the gas (at S.T.P) adsorbed per gram of charcoal. Density of charcoal sample used was 1.5 g cm-3 .
1.
( )
Clouds are charged colloidal solution. Spray of silver iodine (electrolyte) results in coagulation leading ti rain.
2.
( )
shape-selective catalysis: The catalysis which depends upon the pore structure of the catalyst and molecular size of reactant and product molecules is called shape-selective catalysis, e.g. Zeolites are shape-selective catalysis due to their honey- comb structure. ZSM-5 (Zeolite Sieve of Molecular porosity is used to convert methanol into gasoline (petrol).
3.
The process of decomposition of an emulsion into its constituent liquids is called demulsification. Examples of demulsifiers are surfactants, ethylene oxide, etc.
4.
Physisorption is an exothermic process
\(\underset { (Adsorbent) }{ Solid } +\underset { (Adsorbate) }{ Gas } \rightleftharpoons \underset { (Gas\ adsorbed\ on\ solid) }{ Gas/Solid } +Heat\)
According to Le Chatelier's Principle, if we increase, if we increase the temperature, equilibrium will shift in the backward direction, i.e., gas is released fromn the surface on which it is adsorbed.
5.
(a) Colloidal solution of Fe(OH)3 is formed. FeCl3 acts as peptizing agent.
(b) It is due to greater surface area and it has more active sites. Therefore, extent of adsorption is more.
6.
(i) Dialysis: It is a process of removing a dissolved substance from a colloidal solution by means of diffusion through a suitable membrane.
(ii) Electrophoresis: The movement of colloidal particles towards oppositely charged electrode in an electric field is called electrophoresis.
(iii) Tyndall effect: When a strong converging beam of light is passed through a colloidal solution placed in a dark room, the path of beam gets illuminated with a bluish light when viewed at right angles to the direction of the passage of light. This phenomenon is known as Tyndall effect.
7.

(i) It is irreversible |
8.
| Dispersed phase | Dispersion Medium | Name of the colloidal solution | Examples |
| Solid | Gas | Aerosol | Smoke, dust particles |
| Liquid | Liquid | Emulsion | Milk, hair cream, cod-liver oil |
(iii) When solid is dispersed in water, it is called hydrosol, e.g. starch dispersed in water.

11.
(b)
\(\triangle G<0,\triangle S<0,\triangle H<0\)
12.
(i) Blood is a colloidal solution of albuminoid substance. The styptic action (blood stopping action) of alum is due to coagulation of blood forming a clot which stops further bleeding.
(ii) Values associated with Meera's decision are:
(a) Friendship
(b) Keen observation
(c) Applying knowledge of chemistry to daily life
(d) Responsibility
(e) Love and care.
