This reaction is Rosenmund reduction.

The above reaction is nucleophilic addition reaction followed by elimination of water.

Acetone is soluble in water due to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding between polar carbonyl group and water molecules. In benzophenone, the phenyl groups are bulkier so C = 0 cannot form hydrogen bonds with water due to steric hindrance.

Preparation :
When acetaldehyde is treated with 2 equivalent of methanol in presence of HCI, 1,1, - dimethoxy ethane is obtained.

When chromylchloride is used as an oxidising agent, toluene gives benzaldehyde. This reaction is called Etard reaction. Acetic anhydride and CrO₃can also be used for this reaction.
