| ___________ | ....................... |
19.
What is an electric switch? What is the purpose of using it ? Give some examples of electrical appliances where electric switches are used.
20.
A torch requires 3 cells. Show the arrangement of the cells with a diagram inside the torch so that the bulb glows.
21.
In figures A and B, show a bulb connected to a cell in two different ways.
(a) Mention the direction of the current through the bulb in both the cases (Q to P or P to Q)?
(b) Will the bulb glow in both the cases?
(c) Does the brightness of the glowing bulb depend on the direction of current through it?

22.
Battery is a combination of
one cell
no cell
two or more cells
None of these
23.
In the circuit shown in figure, when the switch is moved to ON position.

the bulb A will glow first

24.
In an electric bulb, light is produced due to the glowing of
the glass case of the bulb
the thin filament
the thick wires supporting the filament
gases inside glass case of the bulb
25.
Choose the incorrect statement.
A switch is the source of electric current in a circuit
A switch helps to complete or break the circuit
A switch helps us to use electricity as per our requirement
When the switch is open, there is an air gap between its terminals
26.
Fig. shows a bulb with its different parts marked as 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Which of them label the terminals of the bulb?

27.
What is an electric cell?
28.
What is the direction of current in an electric circuit?
29.
How does an electric bulb glow?
30.
What is electricity?
1.
( )
positive
2.
( )
insulator
3.
( )
conductors
4.
( )
two
5.
( )
switch
6.
(a)
7.
(a)
8.
(a)
9.
As we know that human body is a good conductor of electricity. So, it is necessary to prevent it from electric shocks.
On the other hand, plastic and rubber are insulators that do not allow electricity to pass through them. Hence, electricians use screwdrivers and pliers which have plastic or rubber covering on them for repair the work.
10.
An electrician should use rubber gloves while repairing an electric switch because rubber is an insulator that does not allow electric current to pass through it. Thus, it prevents his body to get electric shocks.
On the other hand, human body is a conductor of electricity, so it is necessary to prevent it from electric shocks.
11.
Since, eraser is an insulator that means itis a bad conductor of electricity. So, conduction of electric current is not possible. Thus, if instead of safety pin, an eraser is used, bulb will not glow.
12.
Switch is a simple device that is used to either break the electric circuit or to complete it. With the help of a switch, we can use an appliance according to our desire.
The switches used in lighting of electric bulbs and other devices in home works on the same principle.
Some electrical gadgets that are switches built into them are as follows:
(i) Torch
(ii) Table fan
(iii) Television set
(iv) Radio
(v) Electric iron
13.
To complete the circuit, we must join the one end of the wire with the free end of cell. The other end of wire must be connected with the bulb. Now, the bulb will glow.

14.
Materials through which electric current cannot flow are called as insulators. For example: rubber.
15.
Materials used in the electric circuit should be good conductors of electricity that allow electricity to pass through them such as metals (aluminium, copper, iron, etc).
16.
The glowing part of an electric bulb is its filament.
17.
A fused bulb does not glow because in a fused bulb, the filament of bulb burns up and connection is broken or incomplete, so the current cannot flow.
18.
| Activity you perform | Device |
|---|---|
| (1) Get light | Torch |
| (2) Get the hot water | Geyser |
| (3) Get the cold water | Refrigerator |
| (4) Get the moving air | Fan |
| (5) Do the mechanical work | Motor |
| (6) Watch movies | Television |
19.
An electric switch is a device used to complete or break an electric circuit. Usually, it is manually operated.
Purpose of using electric switch: In 'ON' position, the switch allows the current to flow through the circuit. Thus, the circuit becomes a closed circuit. In 'OFF' position, the switch does not allow current to flow through the circuit. Thus, the circuit becomes an open circuit.
Examples: Electrical appliances such as fans, electric lamps, washing machines, juicer and mixer, TV radio, etc, have switches.
20.
The arrangement of bulb should be such that positive terminal of a battery touches the base of the bulb. When switch ON, bulb will glow.

21.
(a) The direction of current will be from Q to P in A and direction of current will be from P to Q in B. Because direction of current is always from positive terminal to negative terminal of the cell or battery.
(b) Yes, the bulb will glow in both the cases because to glow the bulb, we just need to complete the circuit.
(c) No, the brightness of the bulb never depend upon the direction of current passing through it.
22.
(c)
two or more cells
23.
(d)
all bulbs will glow together
24.
(b)
the thin filament
25.
(a)
A switch is the source of electric current in a circuit
26.
( )
Label 3 and 4 show the terminals of the bulb.
27.
( )
It is a source of electricity.
28.
( )
Positive terminal to negative terminal.
29.
( )
When current passes through filament, it gets red hot and emits light.
30.
( )
It is a form of energy.
