While inscriptions tell us about kings and powerful men, here is an excerpt from thePeriyapuranam, a 12th-century Tamil work, which informs us about the lives of ordinary men and women. The red-crested cocks crowed before down calling the brawny Pulaiyar (plural) to their day's work; and by day, under the shade of the kanji tree spread the voice of the wavy-haired Pulaiya women singing as they were husking paddy...

Inscriptions were written by educated class of people. They were living in the urban areas far off or cut off from rural areas. They wrote only the good things of the kingdom. They were least bothered about the bad governance. No media was there to showcase the exploitation, poverty of the poorest of the poor.
We should not leave behind the ordinary men and women of the society. Everyone expects some developmental work to be carried on by the government. Every king should take care of the one who is really in need of help. That is good governance.

Learned Brahmanas composed Prashastis to describe the achievement of the rulers. The reality may be different from the Prashastis. They speak about how the rulers wanted to project themselves as valiant, victorious warriors, etc. Brahmanas were given lands for writing these Prashastis
