In India, it is often said that we are unable to provide health services for all because the government does not have enough money and facilities. After reading the above left hand column, do you think this is true? Discuss.
1.
(i) Health condition of the people in our country is not good as they do not have equal access to health services.
(ii) Health is dependent on basic amenities and social conditions of the people. Hence, it is important to improve the health conditions of our people. And this can be done.
(iii) It is the responsibility of the government to provide quality healthcare services to all its citizens, especially the poor and the disadvantaged.

The following are some of the drawbacks of our healthcare:
(i)Two million cases of malaria and five lakh cases of tuberculosis every year.
(ii) Half of all children are mal nourished. Long Answer Type Questions
(iii) Most doctors settle in urban areas, less doctors in rural areas.
(iv) Private health on rise and Public health care system has not grown as per the need.
(v) Water borne communicable diseases like diarrhoea, hepatitis on the rise. About 21% has no access to clean water

(i) To provide good health care we need good number of hospitals, primary health care centre, dispensaries and family welfare centres.
(ii)We need good doctors, trained nurses and staff.
(iii)We need medicines and related equipments.
(iv)We need medical colleges to train doctors.
(v)We need to provide free health check-ups and diagnostic centre.
(vi) Special campaigns like pulse polio or immunisation campaigns should be promoted.

Private Health Services are those which are privately owned and controlled. There are large number of private health facilities in our country because many doctors run their own private clinics. There are RMPs in rural areas and specialised doctors in urban areas. A number of privately owned hospitals, nursing homes, laboratories, medical shops are also there in urban areas. In private services, people have to pay a lot of money for their treatment.

Public healthcare services are known as 'public' because
(i) resources required to run these centres are obtained from the general public in a way of taxes: So, these facilities are meant for everyone.
(ii) they provide quality services either free of cost or at very low cost.
(iii) their function is to prevent spread of diseases such as T8, malaria, jaundice, etc.

No, adequate health services are not available to all. This is because private services are increasing but public services are not. Thus, private services are available at very high cost to the people living in urban areas only.
Poor people hardly afford these services. They have to borrow money or sell their possessions to pay for their treatment.

The negative aspects of healthcare in India are
(i) There is scarcity of doctors in rural areas as most doctors settle in urban areas.
(ii) Almost 5 lakh people die from tuberculosis every year and the number isn't decreasing.
(iii) Clean drinking water is not available which causes water borne diseases.
(iv) Lack of adequate food causes malnourishment in children.

Positive aspects of healthcare in India are
(i) India has the largest number of medical colleges and produces the largest number of doctors.
(ii) Number of hospitals have been increasing continuously over the years.
(iii) A number of medical tourists visit India for their treatment.
(iv) India is the fourth largest producer of medicines in the world.

Both water and sanitation are parts of basic amenities. If water and sanitation are of poor quality, this will lead to poor health.
Diseases like malaria, diarrhoea, jaundice are water borne diseases caused due to contaminated water and diseases like plague, fever, etc are caused due to unhygienic sanitary conditions.
Thus, improvement in water and sanitation will surely control many diseases, thereby increasing standard of living and good health.

Yes, it is government is trying to do this. But till today our government is not fully successful due to lack of funds.

In India, there are more private services rather than public services. There are countless doctors and private clinics run for profit motive in the urban areas. They provide specialised services. There are many laboratories that do tests and offer facilities like X-ray, ultrasound, etc. Today all these services are run by big companies which in turn also run many businesses related to these private centres such as medical shops, etc.
