(i) (8 - 13) x 7 and 9-(13 x 7)
(ii) [(-6) - (+8)] x (−4) and (-6)- [8(−4)]
(iii)3 x [(-4) + (-10)] and [3 x (-4) + 3 x (-10)]

An elevator descends into a mine shaft at the rate of 5 m/min. If the descent starts from 15 m above the ground level, how long will it take to reach –250 m?

(i) 5 electrons and 3 protons \(\rightarrow \) -5+ = -2 that is electrons тКЭтКЭ
(ii) 6 Protons and 6 electrons \(\rightarrow \)
(iii) 9 protons and 12 electrons \(\rightarrow \)
(iv) 4 protons and 8 electrons \(\rightarrow \)

(i) Consider (8 - 13) x 7 = (-5)7 = -35
Now 8 - (13 x 7)
= 8 - 91 = -83
They are not equal.
(ii) [(-6) - (+8)] x (-4)
Now (-6) - [8 x (-4)] = (-6) - (-32)
= (-6) + (+32) = +26
They are not equal.
(iii) Consider 3 x [(-4) + (-10)] = 3 x -14 = -42
Now [3 x (-4) + 3 x (-10)] = (-12) + (-30) = -42
They are equal.
It is the distributive property of multiplication over addition

\(\frac{\mathrm{P}-\mathrm{Q}}{\mathrm{P}+\mathrm{Q}}=\frac{-15-5}{-15+5}=\frac{-20}{-10}=2\)

Time taken for an elevator to descend 5m
= 1 min
Total distance = 15 - (-250)
= 15 + 250
= 265m
\(\text { Time taken for } 265 \mathrm{~m}=\frac{265}{5} \min\)
= 53 min
4.
Let a, b be two integers.
The product of two integers = -135
a x b = -135
One number,a = -15
b = ?
Other number \(=\frac{135}{-15}=9\)
∴ The other number = 9
5.
(i) 5 electrons and 3 protons \(\rightarrow \) -5 + 3 = -2,2 electrons
(ii) 6 protons and 6 electrons \(\rightarrow \) (+6) + (-6) = 0
(iii) 9 protons and 12 electrons \(\rightarrow \) (+9) + (- 2) = 9 - 12 = - 3 ⇒ 3 electrons
(iv) 4 protons and 8 electrons \(\rightarrow \) (+4) + (-8) = +4 - 8 = -4 ⇒ 4 electrons
(v) 7 protons and 6 electrons \(\rightarrow \) (+7) + (-6) = + 1 1 proton
