(-5) + ____ = -100
25.
_____\(\times \) (-9) = -45
26.
(-10)\(\times \) __ = 20
1.
Depth drilled in one day = –22 feet
Depth of water = –110 feet
Number of days required = –110 ÷ –22 = 5
Hence the workers wil reach resource in 5 days.

2.
Consider, (–42) x (–7), (–42) x (–7) = +294
Consider, (–7) x (–42), (–7) x (–42) = +294
Therefore, (–42) x (–7) and (–7) x (–42) are equal.
It is commutative.
3.
(i) (–35) x (–11) = 385
(ii) 96 x (–20) = – 1920
(iii) (–5) x 12 = –60
(iv) 15 x 5 = 75
(v) 999 x 0 = 0
4.
Pencils received : (+)
Number of pencils Kabilan has = 10
Number of pencils father gove = 6
= 16
Pencils given : (-)
Number of pencils gave to Senthil = 2
Number of pencils gave to Karthick = 3
Number of penciis gave to Sister = 8
= 13
Number of pencils left = Received - Given
= 16-13
Number of pencils left = 3

Since neither profit nor loss
Profit + Loss = 0
(ie) profit = -Loss
Profit earned from 1 notebook = Rs. 5
Profit earned from 20 notebooks = 20 x Rs. 5
= Rs. 100
Loss incurred by selling pens = Rs. 100 Loss
= −100
Loss for 1 pen = Rs. 2
loss = −2
Total number of pens sold = (−100) ÷ (−2)
= 50 pens.
13.
(i) Consider (8 - 13) x 7 = (-5)7 = -35
Now 8 - (13 x 7)
= 8 - 91 = -83
They are not equal.
(ii) [(-6) - (+8)] x (-4)
Now (-6) - [8 x (-4)] = (-6) - (-32)
= (-6) + (+32) = +26
They are not equal.
(iii) Consider 3 x [(-4) + (-10)] = 3 x -14 = -42
Now [3 x (-4) + 3 x (-10)] = (-12) + (-30) = -42
They are equal.
It is the distributive property of multiplication over addition
14.
(i) –3 – (–2)
To subtract –2 from –3 using number line,
Therefore, –3 – (–2) = –3 + 2 = –1
(ii) +6 – (–5)
To subtract –5 from 6 using number line,
Therefore, +6 – (–5) = +6 + 5 = 11.
Now, let us see how to subtract negative integers using additive inverse.
15.
(i)

∴. 8 + (-12) = -4
(ii)

∴ (-3) + (-5) = -8
(iii) (-100) + (-10) = -100-10 = -110
(iv) 20 + (-72) = 20 - 72 = -52
(v) 82 + (-75) = 82 - 75 = 7
(vi) -48 + (-15) = -48 - 15 =- 63
(vii) -225 + (-63) = 225 - 63 = -288
