Questions + Answers key
Take MCQ Science Test1.
The atomic number of an atom is the ______.
Number of neutrons
Number of protons
Total number of protons and neutrons
Number of atoms
2.
_______ is positively charged.
Proton
Electron
Molecule
Neutron
3.
The basic unit of matter is ______.
Element
Atom
Molecule
Electron
4.
There are two electrons in the outermost orbit of the magnesium atom. Hence, the valency of magnesium is_______.
5.
The _______ revolve around the nucleus.
6.
The smaller particles found in the atom are called _______.
7.
Positively charged Particle
8.
Hydrogen
9.
Iron
10.
Neutral Particle
11.
Why neutrons called neutral particles?
12.
What is atomic number?
13.
Define - Atom.
14.
Differentiate mass number from atomic number.
15.
Distinguish Isotopes from Isobar.
16.
Draw the structure of an atom and explain the position of the sub-atomic particles.
17.
An atom of an element has no electron, will that atom have any mass or not? Can an atom exist without electron? If so then give example.
1.
(b)
Number of protons
2.
(a)
Proton
3.
(b)
Atom
4.
( )
2
5.
( )
electrons
6.
( )
Subatomic particles
7.
Proton
8.
Monovalent
9.
Fe
10.
Neutron
11.
The total negative charge of all the electrons outside the nucleus is equal to the total positive charge of all the protons inside the nucleus. This makes the atoms electrically neutral. That is, nuclear charge is the total charge of the protons only. Therefore, neutrons are called as neutral particles.
12.
The number of electrons or protons is an atom is called the atomic number (Z) of an atom.
13.
An atom is the smallest particle of a chemical element that retains its chemical properties.
14.
| Atomic number | Mass number |
| Atomic number = No of protons (or) No of electrons | Mass number = No of protons + No of neutrons |
| Z = P or e | A = P+n |
| Ex: Atomic number (z) of helium is 2 | Ex: Mass nurnber (A) of helium is 4 |
15.
| Isotopes | Isobar |
| i) Having same atomic number, different mass number. | i) Having same mass number, different atomic number. |
| ii) Atoms of same element Ex : 1H1, 1H2, 1H3 |
ii) Atoms of different elements Ex : 20Ca40, 18Ar40 |
16.
Sub-atomic particles:
(i) Proton (p): This is the positively charged particle and it is located at the nucleus.
(ii) Neutron (n): Neutron is inside the nucleus. The neutron does not have any charge. Except hydrogen (protium), the nucleus of all atoms contain neutrons.
(iii) Electron(e): This is a negatively charged particle. Electrons revolve around the nucleus of the atom in specific orbits.
17.
(i) Yes, an atom of an element has no electron will have the mass.
(ii) (Atomic mass, only depends on the mrmber of protons and the number of neutrons inside the nucleus. It is independent of number of electrons.)
(iii) Atom can exist with out electron and becomes a cation.
Ex:
1) Hydrogen atoms (Z = 1) has only one electrons.
2) It loses one electron and becomes H+ ion
3) H → H+ + 1e-
(atom) (Ion)
