Take MCQ Science Test

1.
Sheela shouted there is wall lizard in the room running on the wall. She started throwing shoes and other articles to hurt the lizard. Her mother came in the room and cool down the daughter and said it will not harm you. Do not hurt or kill it.
Answer the following questions based on the above information:
(a) Whether the wall lizard is poisonous?
(b) What is its food and how can it run on the vertical wall?
(c) Give one reason to justify that Sheela's mother action is environment friendly.
2.
Explain how animals in vertebrata are classified into further subgroups.
3.
List the conventions that are followed while writing the scientific names.
4.
What are the differences between amphibians and reptiles?
5.
How do annelid animals differ from arthropods?
6.
Classify the following in their respective phylum/class:
Jellyfish; Earthworm; Cockroach; Rat
7.
State any two characteristics features of animals.
8.
List important features of members of Kingdom Animalia.
9.
How do gymnosperms and angiosperms differ from each other?
10.
How are pteridophytes different from the phanerogams?
11.
What are phanerogams?
12.
In the hierarchy of classification, which grouping will have the smallest number of organisms with maximum common characteristics and which will have the largest number of organisms?
13.
What is the criterion for classification of organisms as belonging to kingdom Monera or Protista?
14.
Why a method of classification of animals proposed by Aristotle was not accepted? Explain with example.
15.
Give three examples of the range of variations that you see in life forms around you.
1.
(a) Wall lizard found in our houses is not poisonous.
(b) It eats insects. The ordinary wall lizard are equipped with vacuum-cupped toes which enable the lizard to chase insects along vertical walls and ceiling of rooms.
(c) Sheela's mother avoided the cruelty toward the animals, cleared misconcept and avoid disturbing the natural food chain.
2.
Vertebrata are classified into further subgroups on the basis of simple to complex form and function of the organisms.
For example, fishes have two chambered heart, amphibians and reptiles have three chambered heart where as aves and mammals have four chambered heart to keep oxygenated and deoxygenated blood separately.
3.
Conventions followed while writing the scientific names are:
(i) The name of the genus begins with a capital letter.
(ii) The name of the species begins with a small letter.
(iii) When printed, the scientific name is given in italics.
(iv) When written by hand, the genus name and the species name have to be underlined separately.
4.
| Amphibians | Retiles |
|---|---|
| 1. They lack c=scales on the body | 1. They have scales |
| 2. Their eggs do not have tough covering. | 2. They eggs have tough covering. |
| 3. They lay their eggs in water. | 3. They do not need to lay their eggs in water. |
5.
| Annelid animals | Arthropods |
|---|---|
| 1. They have true body cavity (coelomic cavity) which is not filled with blood. | 1. They coelomic is filled with blood. |
| 2. Body bears lateral appendages for locomotion in the form of chitineous seate or parapodia. | 2. They have jointed legs for locomotion. |
| 3. Annelids do not have chitinous exoskeleton. | 3. They have chitinous exoskeleton. |
6.
(i) Jellyfish - Phylum Coelenterata
(ii) Earthworm - Phylum Annelida
(iii) Cockroach - Phylum Arthropoda
(iv) Rat - Phylum Vertebrata Class-Mammalia
7.
Characteristic features of Animals:
(i) They are mobile and ingest food i.e, they depend on plants or other animals for food.
(ii) They stop growing after maturity.
8.
Characteristics of Animalia:
(i) These organisms are eukaryotic and do not have cell walls.
(ii) They have multicellular body.
(iii) They are heterotrophic.
(iv) Most of the them are mobile.
9.
| Gymnosperms | Angiosperms |
|---|---|
| 1. Reproductive organs are present in cones. | 1.Reproductive organs are flowers |
| 2. The plants bear naked seeds. | 2. The seeds are enclosed within fruit. |
10.
| Pteridophytes | Phanerogams |
|---|---|
| 1. Pteridophytes have naked embryos that are called spores. | 1.Phanerogams produce seeds which consists of embryo and stored food. |
| ofThe reproductive organs are inconspicuous, therefore called cryptogamae (those with hidden reproductive organs). | 2. They have well differentiated reproductive tissues which after reproductive process produce seeds. |
11.
Phanerogams. These plants which have well differentiated reproductive tissues and bear seeds are included in phanerogams. Their plant body is differentiated into root, stem, and leaves. They also have well developed vascular system (xylem and phloem). They have multicellular sex organs. Their embryo develops from a fertilized egg.
12.
1. Species will have the smallest number of organism with a maximum of characteristics in common.
2. Kingdom will have the largest number of organisms.
13.
Kingdom Monera. The organisms which are unicellular and do not have a membrane bound nucleus and cell organelles are put under Monera. For examples, Bacteria, Cyanobacteria, etc.
Kingdom Protista. The unicellular organisms which have membrane bound definite nucleus and cell organelles are grouped under the kingdom Protista. Example-Protozoa like Amoeba diatoms, etc.
14.
Aristotle classified animals on the basis of habit. For example, corals, whales, octopuses, star fish and sharks live in sea. These are very different from each other in many ways. Except habitat, they do not share other similarities. This way is not good for making groups of organisms to study and think about.
15.
Range of Variations
(i) Life span-Mosquitoes live for a few days whereas cow, dog, etc. live for many years.
(ii) Colour-Some organisms like certain cows, horses, dogs are white but some birds and flowers are brightly coloured.
(iii) Size-Some organisms are so small that we cannot see them with naked eyes. On the other hand, eucalyptus tree is several metre tall.
