On the morning of 11 September 1973, the military took over the Seaport. Then the military surrounded the president's house and started bombing it. President Allende died in the military attack. General Augusto Pinochet , an Army general, led the coup. The government of the United States of America was unhappy with Allende's rule and is known to have supported and funded activities that led to the coup. Pinochet became the President of the country and ruled it for the next 17 years. From a government that was elected by the people, the power shifted to the military officers.

The workers led by Walesa signed a 21-point agreement with the government that ended their strike. The struggle for free and independent trade union and other freedoms was played under his leadership.
Finally in 1990, Walesa was elected president of Poland.

Since poor and small nations need more international help for their development, their voice must be heard with equal respect. The enjoyment of veto power by 5 permanent members of the Security Council of V.N.O. is undemocratic since anyone of these countries can stall any decision. It means that the council cannot take a decision if any permanent member says 'no' to that decision. Some other international organisations like IMF (International Monetary Fund) and World Bank also are not working on democratic principles.
