The Government of India has carefully designed food security system which is basically composed of two basic components.
(i) Buffer stock
(ii) Public distribution system
In addition to these, various poverty alleviation programmes have also been introduced.Some of these programmes are:
(a) Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS)
(b) Food for work (FFW)
(c) Mid-day meals
(d) Antyodaya, AAY and APS

Due to natural calamity, like drought, total production of foodgrains decreases. It creates shortage of food in the affected areas. Due to shortage of food prices go up. Some people cannot afford to buy food at this high price. In case, such a situation is allowed to continue, it causes massive starvation leading to famine.

It is true that a section of people in India are still without food. We are self-sufficient in foodgrains, so there should not be anyone left without food. In actual practice and real life it is not so.
1. There is a section of people, still without food. This is because they do not have money to buy food.
2. These people are chronic poor without requisite purchasing power.
3. This section consist of landless and unemployed persons with poor means of income.

Yes, we believe that the green revolution has made India self-sufficient
1. This was possible due to the introduction of High Yield Varieties (HYVs) of seeds, improved irrigation facilities, and mechanization of agriculture.
2. The use of tractors, threshers, chemical fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides etc.revolutionised the agricultural production.

In decade 2000-2010, India experienced the highest decadal increase in foodgrain production

In the year 2005-06, our country crossed the 200 million tonnes per year mark in foodgrain production

Yellow card helps Ahmad to get sufficient quantity of wheat, rice, sugar and kerosene oil for his daily use. He gets these essentials at half of the market price.

Ramu is unemployed for about 4 months in a year because that is the time when plant consolidation and maturing takes place. He cannot work on a farmland during this period

Agriculture is a seasonal activity because it takes 4-5 months period for plant consolidation and maturing in a year. This means that there will be no work on the farm

Besides the government which is committed to the food security in the country, different cooperative societies also play a vital role in providing low priced goods to the people.
Many cooperatives like Mother Dairy in Delhi provides milk, vegetables and fruits in Delhi and NCR at subsidised rates.
(i) Various other societies like Kendriya Bhandar, Super Bazar also provide goods at rates below the market price to the general public.
(ii) An initiative was taken by Academy of Development Science (ADS) in setting up grain banks throughout the state of Maharashtra has been well applauded
