Questions + Answers key
Take MCQ Science Test1.
A compound 'X' has molecular formula C2H60 is saturated hydrocarbons and is a very good solvent. How can you convert it into unsaturated hydrocarbon? Identify X and show its conversion with the help of equation.
2.
A hydrocarbon compound A is active ingredient of wine and cough syrup. A on oxidation with acidified K2Cr2O7 forms compound B. Identify the compound A and B and write the chemical equations involved.
3.
Give two examples in which reactants react to show combination reaction and a new product is formed. This new product decomposes to give the initial reactants.
\(
\text { e.g., } X+Y \stackrel{\text { combination }}{\longrightarrow} Z \ \ \ \ \ Z \stackrel{\text { decomposition }}{\longrightarrow} X+Y
\)
4.
Three organisms ate food in the form of glucose and the end products after respiration are:
a - ethanol + CO2
b - CO2+H2O
c - Lactic acid + water
Explain how is this possible?
5.
The formula for linear magnification of a spherical mirror is \(m=\frac { { h }_{ 2 } }{ { h }_{ 1 } } =\frac { -v }{ u } \). What determines the sign of m? What is the significance of this sign?
6.
In F2 generation, progeny having different traits are produced in the ratio of 3 : 1. Is it a monohybrid cross or dihybrid cross?
7.
An element A belongs to group II and another element B belongs to group 15 of the periodic table.
(a) What is the number of valence electrons in A and B?
(b) What is the valency of A and B?
8.
Which of the following compounds contain a carboxyl group?
CH3OH, CH3COOH, CH3CHO, CH3COCH3
9.
In the reaction:
2KClO3 \(\overset { \Delta/MnO_2 }{ \rightarrow } \) 2KCl + 3O2, what does the '\(\Delta\)' and 'MnO2' signify? What type of reaction is this?
10.
A substance 'A' displaces 'B' from its solution in water. It is called displacement reaction. What other chemical name can be given to such type of reactions? Explain with an example.
1.
'X' is CH3-CH2OH ethanol. It can be made unsaturated by heating it with cone. H2SO4 which is a dehydrating agent and removes water from it, thereby forming ethene.
CH3-CH2OH \(\xrightarrow[{}{H_2SO_4}]{Hot \ Conc.}\) H2C = CH2 + H2O
Ethene
2.
A is ethanol, C2H5OH
B is ethanoic acid, CH3COOH
Equation: C2H5OH \(\overset {acidified \ K_2Cr_2O_7}{\longrightarrow}\) CH3COOH
3.
The reactions in which reactants combine to form products and then again decomposes to give initial reactants are called reversible reactions.
(i) N2 + 3H2 \(\longrightarrow\) 2NH3 (ii) CaO + CO2\(\longrightarrow\) CaCO3
NH3\(\longrightarrow\)N2 + 3H2 CaCO3 \(\longrightarrow\) CaO + CO2
4.
(a) because of anaerobic respiration; (fermentation)
(b) because of aerobic respiration
(c) because of anaerobic respiration in muscle cells.
5.
In the formula \(m=\frac { { h }_{ 2 } }{ { h }_{ 1 } } =\frac { -v }{ u } \), the sign of m is determined by the signs of h1 and h2 . When m is positive, the image is virtual and erect. When m is negative, the image is real and inverted.
6.
Monohybrid cross.
7.
(a) Since the element A belongs to group II, it will have two valence electrons. On the other, the element B belongs to group 15 and so it will have 15 - 10 = 5 valence electrons.
(b) The electronic configuration of element A is 2 and so the valency is 2. On the other hand, the electronic configuration of the element B is 2, 8, 5 and so the valency is 3.
8.
CH3COOH
9.
The above reaction is a decomposition reaction. The symbol \(\Delta\) represents the heat and the MnO2 represents that it acts as a catalyst for the decomposition reaction to take place. Since the decomposition takes place in presence of heat, the reaction is thermal decomposition.
10.
A substance 'A' which displaces 'B' from its solution in water must be higher in reactivity. Therefore, 'A' must be high reactivity metal, let us say zinc(Zn). The 'B' must be copper sulphate solution. This is because copper is least reactive than zinc.
CuSO4+Zn\(\rightarrow\)ZnSO4+Cu
In this reaction, zinc is oxidised to zinc sulphate and copper sulphate is reduced to copper metal. Thus this reaction is also called redox reaction.
