Take MCQ Biology Test1.
(i) Why is mitosis also known as an equational division?
(ii) You are viewing a dividing cell under a microscope. How can you determine whether it is an animal cell or a plant cell?
2.
How does meiosis facilitate creation of off springs, with distinct characters?
3.
How does cytokinesis in plant cells differ from that in animal cells?
4.
Meiosis is advantageous than mitosis as it produces variations so plays important role in evolution. What are the stages during which chances of recombination of genes are increased during meiosis? Explain these events.
5.
What is the need of meiosis in cell division?
1.
(i) Meiosis is known as equational division because number of chromosomes maintain equal in daughter cells as in the parental cells after division.
(ii) Cytokinesis is different in plant cells and animal cells. Animal cell divides by cell furrow system, while plant cell divides by cell plate method.
2.
Meiosis happens during gametogenesis and as a result gametes have half the number of chromosomes. During fertilization, when gametes fuse together two different sets of chromosomes make a new set. This results in an offspring, who has distinct characters, compared to parents.
3.
Due to the presence of a cell wall, cytokinesis in plant cells is significantly different from that in animal cells. Rather than forming a contractile ring, plant cells construct a cell plate in the middle of the cell. The Golgi apparatus releases vesicles containing cell wall materials. These vesicles fuse at the equatorial plane and form a cell plate. The cell plate begins as a fusion tube network, which then becomes a tubulo-vesicular network (TVN) as more components are added. The TVN develops into a tubular network, which then becomes a fenestrated sheet which adheres to the existing plasma membrane.
4.
Stages during the recombination of genes occurs in meiosis are
(i) Crossing over is exchange of genes between the non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes. It occurs at recombination nodules during pacytene stage of prophase-I of meiosis-I and is regulated by recombinase enzyme.
(ii) Arrangement of bivalents at the equator of the spindle during metaphase-I of meiosis.
5.
(i) Meiosis is essential for all sexually reproducing organisms.
(ii) It occurs in reproductive cells, so that gametes formed are haploid or have half the number of chromosomes of those cells which are directly derived from zygote.
(iii) Two types of gametes fuse during the zygote formation. As a result, Zygote comes to have double the number of chromosomes contained in the gametes. Meiosis maintains a fixed number of chromosomes of a species by reducing it to number by half.
