Take MCQ Biology Test

1.
Ram is a person of age 42 years old living in a village of Assam. His house is surrounded by a number of bamboo trees but he could not see any flower on them until now. What can be the explanation of his observation? How does bamboo reproduce?
2.
How do gemmules and gemma cup differ from each other?
3.
How does gamete transfer take place in crosspollinating plants?
4.
Differentiate binary fission and multiple fission.
5.
The number of taxa exhibiting asexual reproduction is drastically reduced in the higher plants (angiosperms) and higher animals (vertebrates) as compared with lower groups of plants and animals. Analyse the possible reasons for this situation.
6.
List three strategies that a bisexual chasmogamous flower can evolve to prevent self pollination (autogamy).
7.
In general, the male gametes are motile while the female gametes are stationary. Mention two types of exceptions to this, with an example for each.
8.
What are pre-fertilisation events? Name the two main pre-fertilisation events.
9.
What are
(a) continuous breeders and
(b) seasonal breeders?
10.
Name the units of vegetative propagation in water hyacinth. Explain giving reasons why it has become the most invasive aquatic weed.
11.
The cell division involved in gamete formation is not of the same type in different organisms. Justify.
12.
Mention the life span of:
(a) Crocodile (b) Crow
(c) parrot and (d) butterfly.
1.
Bamboo flowered once in its life time after 50-100 years. Therefore he could not see any flower on bamboo trees
2.
1. Gemmules are the internal buds found in coelenterates and sponges.
2. Gemmae are the external buds found in bryophytes
3.
In unisexual or cross pollinating plants, the pollination helps in transfer of pollen grains to the stigma. Pollen grains germinate on the stigma and produce the pollen tubes. The latter carry the male gametes and reach the ovule and discharge male gametes near the egg.
4.
Differences between binary fission and multiple fission.
| Binary fission | Multiple fission |
| 1. It involves the division of parent into two equal sized daughter individuals. | 1. It involves the simultaneous division of parent into many small daughter individuals. |
| 2. it is common in protozoans and also occurs in flatworms | 2. It occurs in many protozoans such as plasmodium |
5.
(i) both angiosperms and vertebrates have a more complex structural organisation.
(ii) They have evolved very efficient mechanism of sexual reproduction.
(iii) Since asexual reproduction does not create new genetic pools in the offspring and consequently hampers their adaptability to external conditions, these groups have resorted to reproduction by the sexual method which introduces variations.
6.
(i) Protandry: (maturation of anthers before stigma) or protogyny (maturation of stigma before anther) i.e. Dichogamy may take place.
(ii) To bear styles of different lengths.
(iii) Heterostyly: To bear lever mechanism e.g. Salvia.
7.
(i) Both male and female gametes are non-motile, eg. certain algae and few fungi.
(ii) In seed plants, the male gametes are non-motile and are carried in the pollen tube to the egg.
8.
1. Pre-fertilisation events are those events of sexual reproduction that occur prior to fusion of gametes (syngamy).
2. Gametogenesis and gamete transfer are the two major pre-fertilisation events.
9.
(a) Those mammals which are reproductively active throughout their reproductive phase, are called continuous breeders.
(b) Those mammals which are living in natural/wild conditions and exhibit the reproductive cycles only under favourable seasons during their reproductive phase, are called seasonal breeders.
10.
Offset. The plants propagate vegetatively at such a phenomenal rate that it is very difficult to get rid of them; it drains oxygen from the water and causes mortality of aquatic organisms.
11.
1. In haploid organisms, showing haplontic life cycle, gamete formation involves only mitosis; the diploid zygote formed by the fusion of two haploid gametes, undergoes meiosis (zygotic meiosis).
2. In diploid organisms, showing diplontic or haplodiplontic life cycle, gamete formation involues meiosis (gametic meiosis) and haploid gametes are formedl; the diploid zygote undergoes mitosis to form diploid individuals.
12.
(a) 60 years
(b) 15 years
(c) 140 years
(d) 1-2 weeks
