Take MCQ Biology Test

1.
Gametes are never formed by meiosis in haploid individuals. Is meiosis absent or present in haploid organisms? If present then when does it occur?
2.
Reproduction is not an essential vital process for the survival of an organism even when the organism invests huge resources in this process, why?
3.
Name any two organisms and the phenomenon involved where the female gamete undergoes development to form new organisms without fertilisation.
4.
How can healthy potato plants be obtained from a desired potato veriety which is viral infected
5.
Select out any four animals to demonstrate examples of bisexual organism:
Frog, Earthworm, Cockroach, Spider, Sponge, tapeworm, leech, honey, bee, Rat, Rabbit, House fly.
6.
A gardener grafted a scion of "Dashahari" mango twig to the stock of Zea mays. He took all precautions during the grafting process but failed to get positive results as the grafting was not successful. Give the possible reason.
7.
Name the organisms with respect to their diverse sexuality
1. Bisexual flower
2.Monoecious plant
3. Dioecious plant
4. Bisexual animal
5. Unisexual animal
8.
Explain the role of tapetum in the pollen grain wall formation.
9.
Differentiate between oviparous and viviparous animals with an example of each.
10.
Differentiate between external fertilisation and internal fertilisation with an example for each.
11.
Describe the process of sporulation seen in Amoeba.
12.
How does yeast reproduce asexually? Show it diagrammatically.
13.
Distinguish between asexual and sexual reproduction. Why is vegetative reproduction also considered as a type of asexual reproduction?
14.
Meiosis is an essential event in the sexual life cycle of any organism. Give two reasons.
1.
Gametes are normally always haploid (N) structure. In haploid organisms, they are never formed by meiosis. They are formed by mitotic divisionss, In haploid organism, there is zygotic meiosis i.e., it takes place in the zygote formed as a result of gametic fusion. Meiosis occurs in the zygote to form haploid spores which give rise to haploid organisms.
2.
Although reproduction is not a vital process for the survival of an organism but however it is essential for the survival of a population of a species and moreover it adds new individuals in a population.
3.
(i) Rotifers/honeybees/some lizards/turkey.
(ii) Parthenogenesis.
4.
The healthy, virus-free potato plants can be obtained from virus infected desired potato variety by meristem culture (Tissue culture technique) because meristems are not affected by viruses, they remain virus free even in the plants affected by virus. Explants from the meristematic regions like apical or axillary buds or from the nodal segments are taken and cultured on the solid medium enriched by cytokinin and auxin in suitable ratio under aseptic condition. Adventitious roots and shoots develop from the explant resulting in the formation of new plantlets which are finally transferred to the field.
5.
Earthworm, Sponge, Tapeworm, Leech.
6.
Gardener did a mistake by selecting a monocotyledonous stock for grafting a dicotyledonous scion. Usually grafting is between two dicotyledonous plants where cambium develops at the place of grafting.
7.
1. Sweet potato
2. Chara
3. Marchantia
4. Tapeworm
5. Rabbit.
8.
Role of tapetum in the pollen grain wall formation
During microsporogenesis, the cells of tapetum provide various enzymes, hormones, amino acids and other nutritive materials to the dividing microsporocytes. The main functions of tapetum are:
1. Transportation of nutrients into anther locule at the time of meiosis in spore mother cells.
2. Secretion of enzymes and hormones.
3. Production of Ubisch bodies which are coated with sporopollenin to cause thickening of exine.
4. Secretion of any oily material (pollen kit) over outerside of mature pollen.
5. Secretion of special proteins for pollen to recognise compatibility.
9.
| Oviparous animals | Viviparous animals |
| These are the animals which lay fertilised or unfertilised eggs. | The are the animals which give birth to young ones. |
| Chances of survival are less as off-spring of oviparous animals are at a great risk as they are threatened by their predators and unfavourable environmental conditions, e.g. frogs, birds. | Chances of survival are hih as offspring of viviparous animals are protected by the parent organism from predators/enemies and unfavourable climate, eg. Human beings/mammals. |
10.
| External fertilisation | Internal fertilisation |
| When fusion of gametes (syngamy) occurs outside the body of the oranism, it is called external fertilisation. | When fusion of a gametes (syngamy) occurs inside the body of the oranism, it is called internal fertilisation. |
| A large number of gametes are released in the surrounding medium by such animals, e.g. frog and bonyfish. | The number of ova produced is less, but a large number of male gametes are formed, as they have to travel towards the ovum, e. birds, human beings, etc. |
| Chances of survival of offspring are less. | Chances of survival of offspring are high. |
11.
Sporulation is the process in which the products of multiple fission become individually surrounded by a cyst wall before being released from the parent; each of them is a spore. The sporulation remain dormant during unfavourable conditions and germinate when conditions become favorable.
12.
Yeast reproduces asexually by budding under favourable conditions.
13.
| Asexual Reproduction | Sexual Reproduction |
| A single parent is involved; it is uniparental | Two parents (a male and female are involved; it is biparental) |
| There is no fomation or fusion of gametes. | There is formation and fusion of gametes. |
| It involues only mitotic division. | It involves meiosis at some stage. |
| All individuals produced are genetically identical, i.e. clone. |
All individuals produced exhibit genetic variation, i.e. offspring. |
Vegetative reproduction involves a single parent and there is no formation and there is no formation and fusion of gametes; hence it is considered as asexual reproduction.
14.
Meiosis is an essential event in the sexual cycle of any organism because:
(i) It maintains the number of chromosomes fixed (2n) from generation to generation. Haploid gametes are formed as a result of meiosis. Diploid (2n) condition is restored during fertilization.
(ii) It increases the genetic diversity and variation due to crossing over between homologous chromosomes and their random segregation.
