Take MCQ Chemistry Test

1.
Why on dilution the \({ \wedge }_{ m }\) of CH3COOH increases drastically, while that of CH3COONa increases gradually?
2.
Write the cell reaction of a lead storage battery when it is discharged. How does the density of the electrolyte change when the battery is discharged?
3.
What advantage do the fuel cells have over primary and secondary batteries ?
4.
Write the Nernst equation for the cell reaction in the Daniel cell. How will the Ecell be affected when concentration of Zn2+ ions is increased ?
5.
Consider the cell :Cu | Cu2+ || Cl- | Cl2 , Pt
Write the reactions that occur at anode and cathode.
1.
CH3COOH is a weak electrolyte. On dilution, degree of dissociation increases and hence number of ions increases and therefore, \({ \wedge }_{ m }\) increases drastically. On the other hand, CH3COONa is a strong electrolyte. On dilution, number of ions remains the same. Only interionic attractions decrease and hence \({ \wedge }_{ m }\) increases gradually.
2.
\(Pb+Pb{ O }_{ 2 }+2{ H }_{ 2 }{ SO }_{ 4 }\longrightarrow 2Pb{ SO }_{ 4 }+2{ H }_{ 2 }O\)
Density of sulphuric acid solution decreases as water is formed and sulphuric acid is consumed during discharge.
3.
Primary batteries contain limited amounts of reactants. These cells become dead when the reactants are consumed. Secondary batteries can be recharged but take a long time for recharging. Fuel cells can be run continuously so long as the reactants are supplied and the products are removed continuously.
4.
\(Zn+{ Cu }^{ 2+ }\longrightarrow { Zn }^{ 2+ }+Cu,\)
\(\\ { E }_{ cell }={ E }_{ cell }^{ 0 }-\frac { 0.059 }{ 2 } \log { \frac { \left[ { Zn }^{ 2+ } \right] }{ \left[ { Cu }^{ 2+ } \right] } } \)
When \(\left[ { Zn }^{ 2+ } \right] \) is increased, Ecell will decrease.
5.
Anode : \(Cu\longrightarrow { Cu }^{ 2+ }+2{ e }^{ - }\) (Oxidation)
Cathode : \({ Cl }_{ 2 }+2{ e }^{ - }\longrightarrow 2{ Cl }^{ - }\) (Reduction)
