21.
The substance A is a fossil fuel. It occurs deep below the earth's crust in certain areas. Another fossil fuel B is found above the substance A. When A is subjected to a process C, a number of different products (fractions) are collected at different temperature ranges which have different uses. A special grade of product D obtained in this process is used as aviation fuel in jet aeroplanes. The product D is also used in stoves, lamps, etc
Now give the answer of the following questions.
(a) What are the substances, A and B?
(b) Write the physical states of substances A and B.
(c) What is the process C called?
(d) Name the product D.
22.
Why petrol is exhaustible natural resource whereas sunlight is not? Explain.
23.

Which of the following is a pair of exhaustible natural resources?
Coal and soil
Air and sunlight
Water and petroleum
Wildlife and minerals
1.
About 300 million years ago, the earth had dense forests in low lying wetland areas. Due to natural processes like flooding, these forests got buried under the soil and deposited as fossil. Due to high temperature and pressure, dead plants got slowly converted into coal.
2.
Decantation can be used to separate a mixture of petroleum and water. The mixture is allowed to stand. Carefully, lighter layer can be poured and separated without disturbing the heavier one.
3.
Disadvantages of using fossil fuels are
(i) It causes air pollution.
(ii) It causes global warming because they produce greenhouse gas, i.e. carbon dioxide on burning
(iii) The by-products of burning fuels cause acid rain which pollute water resources
4.
Difference between coke and coal are as follows:
| Coke | Coal |
| It is almost pure form of carbon | It mainly contains mainly carbon. |
| It is an amorphous form of carbon | It is a non-crystalline form of carbon |
| It is obtained by heating coal in the absence of air. | It is obtained by the decay of vegetation which existed millions of year ago. |
5.
The advantages of using CNG and LPG as fuels are as follows :

22.
The natural resources which are present in a limited quantity in nature and can be exhausted (used up) by human activities are called exhaustible natural resources, e.g. coal, petroleum, natural gas, minerals, forests, wildlife, etc.
It requires millions of years for the conversion of the dead organisms into petroleum, from which petrol is separated. So, once the present stock of it gets exhausted, no new supplies of it will be available to us in the near future, whereas sunlight is present in an unlimited quantity in nature, so it is inexhaustible natural resource. It is not likely to be exhausted by human activities.
