Animals exhibiting external fertilisation produce a large number of gametes. Pick the appropriate reason from the following.
The animals are small in size and want to produce more offsprings
Food is available in plenty in water
To ensure better chance of fertilisation
Water promotes production of large number of gametes
19.

1.
Both Hydra and Amoeba reproduce asexually involving only single parent but the modes are different. Hydra reproduces from bulges or buds arising from the parent body that grows and matures into another organism, while Amoeba reproduces by binary fission.
2.
Difference between viviparous and oviparous animals are
| Viviparous animal | Oviparous animal |
| Animals that reproduce by laying eggs. | Animals that give birth to their young ones directly. |
| Development of zygote takes place outside the female parent, e.g.birds, fishes, crocodiles, snakes and lizards. | Development of zygote takes place inside the body of female parent e.g. mammals, including humans. |
3.
Sperm is a male reproductive cell. It is also called a male gamete. It is a single cell with all cell components. It is tiny with a head, a middle piece and a tail. The long tail helps to move through the female tract.
4.
Difference between internal fertilisation and external fertilisation are
| Internal fertilisation | External fertilisation |
| It is the fertilisation that takes place inside the female body. | It is the fertilisation that takes place outside the female body, generally in water. |
| Sperms are released in female body. | Sperms and ova are released in water outside the female body. |
| It is common in terrestrial animals, e.q. humans, cats, dogs, etc. | It is very common in aquatic animals, e.q. frogs fishes, etc. |

Hens lay eggs after fertilisation, therefore their eggs are covered with hard shell to protect the young ones. This shows that fertilisation in hen is internal. The frogs on the other hand lay both sperms and eggs in water prior to fertilisation. Thus, the fertilisation in frog takes place in water, hence it is external.
