(a) Adult Literacy Rate refers to the percent of people aged 15+.
(b) The differences in literacy rates between males and females are narrowing down as indicated by the above numerical information. In 1990, male literates were 61.9% whereas females literates were just 37.9%. But during the span of 27 years (2017-18) the literacy rate has improved and the difference also has narrowed down from 82% (males) and 66% (females). This is signifying a positive development in gender equity. The need to promote education for women in India is keenly desired to improve their economic independence and social status .
