Take MCQ Chemistry Test

1.
The correct IUPAC name of the compound
4 – chloro – 2,3 – dimethyl pentan – 1-ol
2,3 – dimethyl – 4- chloropentan -1-ol
2,3,4 – trimethyl – 4- chlorobutan -1-ol
4– chloro – 2,3,4 – trimethyl pentan – 1-ol
2.
Which of the following compounds on reaction with methyl magnesium bromide will give tertiary alcohol.
benzaldehyde
propanoic acid
methyl propanoate
acetaldehyde
3.
An alcohol (x) gives blue colour in victormayer’s test and 3.7g of X when treated with metallic sodium liberates 560 mL of hydrogen at 273 K and 1 atm pressure what will be the possible structure of X?
CH3 CH (OH) CH2CH3
CH3 – CH (OH) – CH3
CH3 – C (OH) – (CH3)2
CH3- CH2 –CH (OH) – CH2 – CH3
4.
What is 'Glycerose'? How is it prepared from glycerol?
5.
How will you convert of ethylene glycol to 1,4 - dioxane.
6.
What is metamerism? Give the structure and IUPAC name of metamers of 2-methoxy propane
7.
How does glycerol react with KHSO4?
8.
Explain Swern oxidation of propan-2-ol to propanane.
9.
Explain saytzeff rule with an example
10.
How will you distinguish the primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols by Victor Meyer's method?
1.
(a)
4 – chloro – 2,3 – dimethyl pentan – 1-ol
2.
3.
CH3 CH (OH) CH2CH3
2R-OH+ 2Na ⟶ 2RONa + H2 ↑
2 moles of alcohol gives 1 mole of H2 which occupies 22.4 L at 273 K and 1 atm number of moles of alcohol
= 2 moles of R -OH/22.4L of H2 x 560 ml
= 0.05 moles
No of moles = mass/molar mass = m/M
= 3.7/0.05 = 74 g mol-1
General formula for (R-OH) Cn H2n + 1OH
n(12) + (2n + 1) (1) + 16 + 1 = 74
14n = 74 - 18
14n = 56
n = 56/14 = 4
The "2" alcohol which contains 4 carbon is CH3 - CH (OH) CH2 - CH3
4.
Oxidation of glycerol with Br2/H2O (or) NaOBr (or) Fenton reagent (FeSO4 + H2O2) gives a mixture of glyceraldehyde and dihydroxy acetone (This mixture is named as glycerose).
5.
When ethylene glycol is treated with cone. H2SO4 two molecules of water are removed and the product formed is dioxane.
6.
Ethers having same molecular formula, but alkyl groups attached to the oxygen atom are different. This phenomenon is known as metamerism.
Metamers of 2- methoxy propane
\(\mathrm{C}_{2} \mathrm{H}_{5}-\mathrm{O}-\mathrm{C}_{2} \mathrm{H}_{5}-\) diethyl ether
\(\mathrm{CH}_{3}-\mathrm{O}-\mathrm{CH}_{2}-\mathrm{CH}_{2}-\mathrm{CH}_{3}\) methyl n-propyl ether
7.
When glycerol is heated with dehydrating agents such as Con H2SO, KHSO4 etc .... , it undergoes dehydration to form acrolein.
8.
(i) In this method, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is used as the oxidising agent, which converts alcohols to ketones aldehydes.
(ii) In this method an alcohol is treated with DMSO and oxalyl chloride followed by the addition of triethylamine.
9.
10.
Victor Meyer's test:
This test is used to distinguish 1°, 2°, and 3° alcohols.
This test consists of the following steps:
(i) Alcohol is converted into alkyl iodide by treatment with P/I2.
(ii) The alkyl iodide is then converted into nitro alkane by silver nitrate (AgNO2).
(iii) The nitro alkane is treated with nitrous acid (HNO2) and then with aqueous KOH.
(iv) The 1°,2° and 3° alcohols are identified from the colour of the product.
