2.
Distinguish between anemophilous flowers and ornithophilous flowers
3.
How the pollen grains of Vallisneria protect themselves?
4.
Define Homogamy with an example
5.
Why pollination in gymnosperm is said to be direct?
6.
Differentiate between Exine and Intine layers of pollen grain.
7.
Name the two types of tapetum based on its behaviour.
8.
Define totipotency.
9.
Name any four types of grafting
10.
Name the vegetative propagules of the following plants
(a) Allium cepa
(b) Zingiber Officinalis
(c) Agave
(d) Colocasia
11.
What are diaspores?
12.
What is layering?
13.
Mention the contribution of Hofmeister towards Embryology.
14.
Distinguish mound layering and air layering.
15.
Explain the conventional methods adopted in vegetative propagation of higher plants.
1.
The events from pollen deposition on the stigma to the entry of pollen tube into the ovule is called pollen - pistil interaction. It is a dynamic process which involves recognition of pollen and to promote or inhabit its germination and growth.
2.
| Anemophilous Flowers | Ornithophilous Flowers |
|---|---|
| (a) Small sized flowers | Large sized flowers |
| (b) Colorless | Brightly colored |
| (c) Donor produce nectar | Produce large quantity of nectar |
| E.g: Grasses | Bombax |
3.
Vallisneria is an aquatic plant. Pollen grains of Vallisneria are covered by mucilage coating which protects them from wetting.
4.
When the stamens and stigma of a flower mature at the same time it is said to be homogamy. It favours self-pollination to occur. Example: Mirabilis jalapa.
5.
Pollination in gymnosperms is said to be direct as the pollens are deposited directly on the exposed ovules.
6.
| Exine | Intine |
|---|---|
| Thick outer layers | Thin inner layer |
| It is made of cellulose, sporopollenin, and pollenkitt | It is made up of pectin hemicellulose, cellulose, and callose |
| Ununiform layer | Uniform layer |
7.
Tapetum are of two types. Secretory tapetum and Invasive tapetum. Tapetum nourishes the pollen grains.
8.
The genetic ability of a plant cell to produce the entire plant under suitable conditions is said to be totipotency.
9.
(a) Bud grafting
(b) Tongue grafting
(c) Crown grafting
(d) Wedge grafting
10.
(a) Allium cepa - Bulb
(b) Zingiber officinal is - Rhizome
(c) Agave - Bulbils
(d) Colocasia - Corm
11.
The unit of reproductive structures used in vegetative propagation is called diaspore or reproductive propagules.
12.
The stem of a parent plant is allowed to develop roots. After formation of roots, the rooted part is cut and separated and planted to grow into a new plant (eg) Ixora and Jasminum.
13.
Hofmeister described the structure of pollen tetrad
14.
| Mound Layering | Air Layering |
|---|---|
| A lower flexible branch of the plant is selected. | A healthy, stiff branch of the plant is selected. |
| The branch is bent to the ground. | The stem is girdled at the nodal region hormones applied. |
| A part of the branch is buried in the soil leaving the tips exposed and allowed for rooting | The girdled portion is covered with Damp or moist soil and allowed for rooting. |
15.
Artificial propagation of higher plants used by man for a very long time are called conventional methods
1) Cutting
The cut parts from (root, stem, leaf) parent plant are grown in suitable medium. They grow into new plants
Example:
(i) Root Cutting - Malus.
(ii) Stem Cutting - Hibiscus.
(iii) Leaf cutting - Begonia.
2) Grafting
Parts of two different plants are joined so that they continue to grow as one plant of the two plants the plant which is in contact with the soil is called stock the plant used for grafting is called scion.
Example:
(i) Citrus, Mango.
(ii) There are different types of grafting based on the method of uniting the scion and stock.
Layering
The stem of the parent plant is allowed to develop roots while still intact. After the roots formation rooted part is cut and planted to grow as a new plant.
Example:
Ixora, Jasminum
It is of two types - Mound / Air layering.
