(i) Thermoplastic: They become soft on heating and hard on cooling. They can be remolded
E.g. polythene, PVC, polystrene
(ii) Thermo setting : Do not be come soft on heating set to an infusible mass upon heating.
E.g. bakelite, melamine, formaldehyde

1. The materials that are readily decomposed by microorganisms in the environment are called biodegradable.
2. Natural polymers degrade on their own after certain period of time but the synthetic polymers do not.
3. It leads to serious environmental pollution. One of the solution to this problem is to produce biodegradable polymers which can be broken down by soil micro organism.
Examples:
(i) Polyhydroxy butyrate (PHB)
(ii) Polyhydroxy butyrate-co-A- hydroxyl valerate (PHBV)
(iii) Polyglycolic acid (PGA), Polylactic acid (PLA)
(iv) Poly ( E caprolactone) (PCL)
(v) Biodegradable polymers are used in medical field such as surgical sutures, plasma substitute etc...
4. these polymers are decomposed by enzyme action and are either metabolized or excreted from the body.

Narcotic drugs: [Opioids]
(i) These are narcotic analgesics. These relieve pain and produce sleep. These drugs are addictive. In poisonous dose, these produces coma and ultimately death.
(ii) They are used for either short-term or long term relief of severe pains. They are mainly used for post operative pain, pain of terminal cancer.
(iii) Eg: Morphine, Codeine
Non-narcotic drugs:
(i) These are non- narcotic analgesics. These reduce the pain without causing impairment of consciousness.
(ii) They alleviate pain by reducing local inflammatory responses.
(iii) These are used for short-term pain relief and for modest pain like headache, muscle strain, bruising or arthritis.
(iv) These drugs have many other effects such as reducing fever (antipyretic) and preventing platelet coagulation (eg. aspirin).
(v) These reduce fever by causing the hypothalamus to over ride a prostaglandin - induced increase in temperature.
(vi) Eg. Aspirin, Paracetamol, Ibuprofen. There are two types in it.
a) Anti inflammatory: eg: Aspirin, Paracetamol
b) Non steroidal anti -inflammatory drugs: (NSAIDs) eg: Ibuprofen

d) polythene (LDPE) - Branched polyner

(i) Natural rubber is mixed with 3-5% sulphur and heated at 100-150°C causes cross-linking of the cis-1,4-polyisoprene chains through disulphide (-S-S-) bonds.
(ii) The physical properties of rubber can be altered by controlling the amount of sulphur that is used for vulcanization.
(iii) In sulphur rubber, made with about 1 to 3% sulphur is soft and stretchy.When 3 to 10% sulphur is used the resultant rubber is somewhat harder but flexible.

(i) Monomers :Ethylene glycol and terepathalic acid (or) dimethyl terephthalate.
(ii) Catalyst : Zinc acetate and antimony trioxide.
(iii) Temperature : 500 K
(iv) Product : Terylene

(v) Uses : blending with cotton or wool fibres and as glass reinforcing materials in safety helmets

(i) A polymer containing two or more different kinds of monomer units is called a copolymer.
(ii) For example, SBR rubber(Buna-S) contains styrene and butadiene monomer units.
(iii) Copolymers have properties quite different from the homopolymers.
(iv) Mixture of styrene and 1,3 butadiene to form a copolymer (Buna -S)
Preparation of Buna-S:
It is a co-polymer. It is obtained by the polymerisation of buta -1,3 - diene and styrene in the ratio 3: 1 in the presence of sodium.

Anti fertility drugs are synthetic hormones that suppresses ovulation and fertilisation. They are used in birth control pills.
eg: Synthetic Oestrogen : Ethynylestradiol, Menstranol,
Synthetic Progestrone : Norethindrone, Norethynodrel etc.
