19.
Give reasons for the following.
(a) Aluminum foils are used to wrap food items.
(b) Immersion rods for heating liquids are made up of metallic substances.
(c) A doctor prescribed a tablet to a patient suffering from iron deficiency. The tablet does not look like iron.
(d) Sodium and potassium are stored in kerosene.

12.
Chemical symbol of an element represents:
i) Name of the element
ii) One atom of the element
13.
Metals are Sonorous. On being hit, metals produce a typical ringing sound. So metals are used in making bells.
14.
i) Metals like gold, silver, platinium, copper, titanium are used in making jewellery.

17.
Pickle contains acids which can react with aluminium liberating hydrogen gas. This can lead to the spoiling of the pickle and holes will be formed in the aluminium utensils.
18.
Wires can be drawn out from ductile substances like metals. Being a non-metal wood and stone are brittle. They do not posses the property of ductile. So wires cannot be drawn from materials such as stone or wood.
19.
(a) Aluminum foils are used to wrap food items.
Being as of smalleable metal it can be beaten into sheets to form thin wrapping sheets. Aluminium has a smooth shiny surface Due to which it reflects back the heat radiations a by the food stuffs upon them It maintains the temperature of food stuffs for longer item. Mor.over it won't react with food substances.
(b) Immersion rods for heating liquids are made up of metallic substances.
Immersion rods are made of metallic substances because metals are good conductors of heat and electricity. They got hot very soon when electric current is part a through them and thus warm the liquid.
(c) Sodium and potassium are stored in kerosene.
Sodium and potassium are very reactive. Ther quickly reacts with air and water. So, to keep them inactive they are stored in kerosene.
(d) Mercury is used in thermometers.
Mercury is used in thermometer because
1. It has high coefficient of thermal expansion. Hence the slightest change in temperature is notable.
2. It expands evenly with temperature. So degree of accuracy is high.
3. It has a high boiling point (356.70C) which makes it very suitable to measure higher temperature.
