Questions + Answers key
Take MCQ Science Test1.
The unit of viscosity is
Nm2
poise
kgms–1
no unit
2.
Which of the following liquids has more viscosity?
Grease
Water
Coconut oil
Ghee
3.
If we apply a force against the direction of motion of a body, then the body will
stop moving
move with an increased speed
move with a decreased speed
move in a different direction
4.
Which has greater viscosity, oil or honey? Why?
5.
Why are heavy bags provided with broad straps?
6.
Define one atmosphere.
7.
Name two instruments, which help to measure the pressure of a fluid.
8.
Why is a ball bearing used in a cycle hub?
9.
Describe an experiment to prove that the pressure in a liquid increases with depth.
10.
Explain how friction can be minimised.
11.
Describe an experiment to prove that friction depends on the nature of a surface.
12.
Give the different types of friction and explain each with an example.
13.
Vidhya feels that Mercury is costly. So, instead of mercury can we use water as a barometric liquid? Answer to Vidhya and explain, the difficulty of constructing a water barometer.
14.
Why is it not advisable to take a fountain pen while travelling in an aeroplane?
1.
(b)
poise
2.
(a)
Grease
3.
(d)
move in a different direction
4.
Honey. Honey flows slower than oil. So it has greater viscosity.
5.
i) For giving a lower pressure on the shoulders
ii) Thus providing a larger area of contact with the shoulders.
6.
i) The pressure exerted by the mercury column in a barometer is considered as the pressure of magnitude 'one atmosphere'.
ii) 1 atm = pressure due to 76 cm of mercury column in a barometer = 1.01 x 105 Nm-2.
7.
The instruments Manometer, Bourdon gauge help to pressure of a fluid.
8.
i) The rolling friction is smaller than sliding friction
ii) By using ball bearings sliding friction is replaced by rolling friction
iii) A ball bearing is used in a cycle hub to reduce friction.
9.
Experiment:
i) Take a plasitc bottle
ii) Punch three holes on its side in the same direction but at different heights.
iii) Now pour some water into it and let it flow through the holes.
iv) Observe the flow of water.
Inference:
i) The water comes out from all the holes with a different force and falls on the table at points that are at variable distance from the bottle.
ii) Water from the lowest hole comes out with the greatest force and falls at a point that is at the maximum distance from the bottle.
iii) Water from the top most hole comes out with the least force and Falls at the point that is at the minimum distance from the bottle.
Result;
This activity confirms that the pressure in a liquid varies with the depth of the point of observation in it.
10.
(i) Using lubricants:
1. A substance, which reduces the frictional force is called a lubricant. Eg grease, coconut oil, graphite, castor oil etc.
2. The lubricants fill up the gaps in the irregular surfaces between the bodies in contact
3. This provides a smooth layer thus preventing a direct contact between their rough surface.
(ii) Using ball bearing:
1. Since the rolling friction is smaller than sliding friction, sliding is replaced by rolling with the usage of ball bearings.
2. Lead shots in the bearing of a cycle hub reduces the friction.
11.
Experiment:
i) Arrange some notebooks one over the other to form a platform on a table.
ii) Keep a wide scale, as a slide, such that one of its ends rests on the pile of books:
iii) Take different kinds of materials like cotton cloth, plastic paper, newspaper, writing pad etc.
iv) Place some glass marbles in a bowl placed on the table.
v) First, keep a rectangular piece of paper near the end of the scale which is in contact with the table.
vi) Now release a glass marble from the top end of the scale such that it rolls down the scale.
vii) Allow the marble to roll over the piece of paper and finally, come to rest.
viii) Measure the distance travelled by the marble over the paper using the meter scale.
ix) Replace the rolling surface by placing the plastic sheet, wooden plank, cotton cloth etc.
x) In each trial measure the distance travelled by the glass marble.
xi) Tabulate the distance covered by the marble over each surface.
| S.No | Rolling surface placed on the table | Distance covered by the glass marble after sliding down (in centimetre) |
| 1. | Paper | 8 cm |
| 2. | Glass | 10 cm |
| 3. | Cotten cloth | 5 cm |
| 4. | wood | 6 cm |
Inference:
The marble covers a lesser distance over the cotton cloth in comparison with the distance it covers over the glass plate.
Reason:
i) A rough surface like the cotton cloth offers more frictional force. So the marble moves slowly and cover a minimum distance.
ii) The smooth surface of glass, offers lesser friction. So, the glass marble travels a greater distance over it.
Result:
i) The effect of the force of friction increases as the roughness of the surface increases.
ii) Thus friction depends on the nature of a surface.
12.
Types of Friction:
Friction can be classifed into two basic types
I Static friction
II. Kinetic friction
I. Static friction:
The friction experienced by the bodies which are at rest is called static friction.
eg:- a knot in a thread.
II. Kinetic friction:
Friction existing during the motion of bodies is called kinetic friction
Kinetic friction can be classified into two types
(i) Sliding friction
(ii) Rolling friction
(i) Sliding friction:
When a body slides over the surface of another body, the friction acting between the surfaces in contact is called sliding friction
eg: Sliding on snow in a sled.
(ii) Rolling friction:
When a body rolls over another surface, the friction acting between the surfaces in contact is called rolling friction.
eg: Wheels in vehicles, trolleys, Suitcases.
13.
We cannot use water as a barometric liquid.
Difficulties of constructing a water barometer
i) Water has less density than mercury. Hence the fluid column of water barometer should be atleast 10 metre. This will be 13.6 times more than that of a mercury barometer.
ii) Vapor pressure of mercury is very low. So, very minute variation in atmospheric pressure can be accurately measured. It is not possible in water barometer.
iii) The freezing point of water is 0°C. So, water barometer cannot be used to measure atmospheric pressure at temperatures lower than 0°C.
14.
While travelling in an aeroplane atmospheric pressure decreases with increasing altitude. So pressure inside the aeroplane can also decreases. The pressure inside the fountain pen is more compared to its surrounding Due to varying pressure, the ink gets spilled. Due to ink spillage, fountain pens are not advisable to use while travelling in an aeroplane.
