This problem can be solved by installing a rooftop rainwater harvesting system.
The procedure or working of rooftop rainwater is a typical method. The rainwater falling on the roof is collected through a PVC pipe and filtered using sand and bricks. Then, it is collected in the sump for immediate use.
Excess water from the sump is transferred to a well, which recharges the groundwater. Any further requirement of water can be taken from the well. Sometimes, a hand pump is attached to the pipe that connects the sump. With the use of hand pump, the collected rain water can then be drain out and used.

Some examples of hydraulic structures in ancient India are
In the 1st century BC, Sringaverapura near Allahabad had water harvesting system channeling the flood water of the river Ganga. During the reign of Chandragupta Maurya, dams, lakes, and irrigation systems were extensively built. In the period of 11th century, Bhopal lake, one of the largest artificial lakes was built. The tank in Hauz Khas, Delhi was built by Iltutmish for supplying water to Siri Fort area in the 14th century.

To manage the shortage of water, housing societies and buildings have their own pumping devices to draw groundwater. This has resulted in depletion of fresh water resources and over exploitation of groundwater. Therefore, urbanisation have aggravated the problem of water scarcity.

The shortage of water as compared to its demand is known as Water Scarcity.
The main causes of water scarcity are as follows
(a) Growing Population A large population means more water requirement for cooking, washing and bathing.
(b) Industrialisation The ever increasing number of Industries put pressure on the existing freshwater resources. Industries are heavy users of water.
(c) Commercialisation of Agriculture Commercial crops need more water and other inputs, Assured means of irrigation like tube wells and canals are responsible for the falling ground water levels.

(i) All water that is used primarily ends up in the sea. From there, it enters the hydrological cycle in the form of water vapour. Freshwater is renewed by this cycle when precipitation occurs. Hence, water is a renewable resource.
(ii) Water scarcity or water stress occurs when availability is not enough to match the demand for water. It is caused by an increase in population, growing demand for water, and unequal access to it.
(iii) Multipurpose river projects help in irrigation, electricity production, flood control, inland navigation and fish breeding. However, the reservoirs destroy local flora and fauna. Many native villages are submerged, and people lose their livelihood, with little or no hope of rehabilitation.
