The following are various steps that an accountant takes to locate the errors in the Trial Balance:
(i) Re-totalling of the debit and the credit columns of the Trial Balance to locate the difference in the total of both the columns.
(ii) Checking whether any account is omitted to be recorded with the exact difference amount.
(iii) Divide the difference by 2 and then check whether amount is posted in the wrong column of the Trial Balance.
(iv) Divide the difference by 9, if it is completely divisible, it is an error of transposition of figure, i.e. 546 is written as 645.
(v) If there exists differences especially of Rs 1, Rs 10, Rs 100, Rs 1,000, etc., it suggests that the casting of Subsidiary Books should be checked once again.
(vi) If difference still exists and it is not possible to detect the reason for the difference, then for the time being, the difference is transferred in the suspense account in order to proceed further. Otherwise, a complete checking is suggested.

Rajhans Traders paid Rs 25,000 to Preetpal Traders (a supplier of goods). This transaction was correctly recorded in the cash book, but while posting to the ledger, Preetpal's account was debited with Rs 2,500 only. This constitutes an Error of Commission.

A Trial Balance is a statement showing the balances, or totals of debit and credits, of all the accounts in the ledger with a view to verify the arithmetical accuracy of posting into the ledger accounts.

Accounting Errors are classified into following categories:
(i) Errors of Omission
(ii) Errors of Commission
(iii) Compensatory Errors
(iv) Errors of Principles

Errors of commission is committed in such a way that the double entry is not completed, or a wrong entry is made in the books. For example: if a posting is made to a wrong account or to a wrong side in the same account or in a different account or totals are wrong. Such an error affects agreement of Trial Balance. Errors of principle, on the other hand, violates the rule of accountancy. This involves wrong distinction between expenses and assets and between incomes and liabilities i.e., between revenue and capital items. This does not affect the agreement of Trial Balance.

The objectives of Trial Balance are as follows: (i) Ascertaining arithmetical accuracy: Trial balance act as a device to check the arithmetical accuracy of the accounting process culminating in the ledger accounts. If the Trial Balance agrees, it may be taken that arithmetical errors do not exist, even though this cannot be conclusively stated.
(ii) Summarize: To afford a summarised version of the position of each account and accounts in general. Scanning the Trial Balance enables one to know the assets that one possesses, the amounts that are owed to others and the amounts due from others, etc.
(iii) Facilitates preparation of financial statements: To act as a starting point for the preparation of the final accounts, viz., the Profit & Loss Account and the Balance Sheet. The final accounts are made on the basis of the trial balance. The various adjustments that are to be made can be made only after the Trial Balance is ready.
