What do you understand by guttation?
3.
Define plasmolysis.
4.
What do you understand by osmosis?
5.
What is translocation?
6.
What is transpiration?
7.
Draw a diagram of a stomatal apparatus.
8.
Plants managed to grow under limited water supply without compromising on metabolic activities. How?
9.
How does the phenomenon of mass/bulk flow differ from the diffusion?
10.
In a gridled plant, when water is supplied to the leaves above the girdle, leaves may remain green for some time then wit and ultimately die. What does it indicate?
11.
State any two functions of turgor pressure
12.
Distinguish between exosmosis and endosmosis
13.
Will the ascent of sap be possible without the cohesion and adhesion of water molecules?Explain.
14.
What are proteins? what role do they play in diffusion?
15.
What are the different factors that affect the rate of diffusion?
1.
Minerals cannot be passively absorbed by the roots. Two factors account for this:
1.Minerals are present in the soil as charged particles (ions) which cannot move across cell membranes and
2.The concentration of minerals in the soil is usually lower than the concentration of minerals in the root
2.
In leaves of herbs, when transpiration is nil during night, root pressure results in collection of water droplets on leaves. This phenomenon is called guttation
3.
The shrinkage of cell membrane, away from the cell wall, in plant cells is called plasmolysis. This happens when water moves out of the plant cell.
4.
Movement of water molecules through semi-permeable membrane, from high water potential to low water potential is called osmosis.
5.
Movement of substances over long distance is called translocation.
6.
Transpiration is the phenomenon of water loss due to evaporation through stomata.
7.

8.
Under condition of limited water supply, plants manage to carry on metabolic activities such as photosynthesis, growth and movements, etc, by maintaining high rate of transpiration
9.
Difference between mass flow and diffusion are
| Mass flow | Diffusion |
| It is the movement of substance in bulk or in masses from the one point to another due to pressure differences between the two points |
It is the movement of substance from region of higher concentration/ pressure to a region of lower concentration or pressure. |
| All substance dissolved or suspended in water, move with same pace. |
Different substance moves independently depending on their concentration gradients. |
10.
In a girdled plant, when water is suplied to the leaves above the girdle, leaves may remain green for the sometime because leaves can synthesis their own food through photosynthesis, they will due to non-availability of water and ultimately die as there is no photosynthesis in absence of water.
11.
Two functions of turgor pressure are
(i)Helps in the movement of plants
(ii) Also aids in enlargement of cell
12.
Difference between exosmosis and endosmosis are
| Exosmosis | Endosmosis |
| The outward flow of water from the cell when placed in more concentrated solution like sugar solution (hypertonic) |
The inflow of solvent (water) into a cell from outside when cell is placed in distilled water |
| Cell shrinks in this case and becomes flaccid in nature | Cell swells up in this case and becomes turgid in nature |
13.
The cohesion and adhesion of the water molecules alone create pressure of about 350 atm, which alone are responsible for conducting water to great heights in tall trees without breaking the water column. On the other hand, all forces such as imbibition pressure, and root pressure have been found to create pressure of only 50 atm.
14.
Porins are the proteins that form huge pores in the outer membranes of the plastids, mitochondria and some bacteria. The porins mainly allow the molecules upto the size of small proteins to pass through or they facilitate the process of diffusion
15.
Factors affecting the rate of diffusion are
(i) temperature
(ii) pressure
(iii) gradient of concentration
(iv) permeability of membrane
