7.
A sample study was conducted to know about smoking walk habits of people of two cities. Following data were obtained.
| City A | City B | |
|---|---|---|
| Males in total Population | 45% | 54% |
| Smokers | 22% | 48% |
| Female Smokers | 8% | 18% |
Tabulate the above data.
8.
Out of a total number of 5,000 people who applied for a job, 2,950 were males out of total applicants, 3,500 were of already working and others were unemployed. The numbers of male applicants who belong to Unemployed category were 725.
9.
In a class there are 50 students of whom 40% are males. 30% students got first division, 20% got II division, 40% got III division and 10% failed. Among girls 40% got first division, 30% II division, 30% III division and none failed.
10.
Prepare a blank table showing the following particulars with respect to faculty members of a university, classified according to:
Faculty: arts, science, and commerce
Age group: 25-40, above 40
Sex: male and female
1.
General rules of a table are as follows:
1. A table should be simple and attractive. There should be no need of further explanations (details).
2. Proper and clear headings for columns and rows should be need.
3. Suitable approximation may be adopted and figures may be rounded off.
4. The unit of measurement should be well defined.
5. If the observations are large in number they can be broken into two or three tables.
6. Thick lines should be used to separate the data under big classes and thin lines to separate the sub classes of data.
2.
Format of a table
Table Number Title
| Stub heading | Caption Column heading |
| Stub entries | Body |

3.
Following are the main objects of the tabulation or tabular presentation of statistical data:
It simplifies the complex data.
It facilitates comparison.
It helps to give better identity to the data. '
It provides a good means of arrangement.
4.
Simple and complex tables: The distinction between simple and complex table is based on the number of characteristics studied.
In a simple table only one character is shown. Hence this type of table is also known as one-way table. On the other hand in a complex table two or more characteristics are shown. When two characteristics are shown such a table is known as two-way table or double tabulation.
Example of one-way table: Number of employees in state bank according to age group
| Age (in years) | No. of employees |
| Below 25 25-35 35-45 Above45 |
3 2 2 3 |
Example of two-way table: Number of employees of state bank in different age groups according to sex
| Age(in years) | Employees | Total | |
| Males | Females | ||
| Below 25 | 3 | 2 | 5 |
| 25-35 | 4 | 5 | 9 |
| 35-45 | 5 | 6 | 11 |
| Above 45 | 2 | 3 | 5 |
| Total | 14 | 16 | 30 |
When three or more characteristics are represented in the same table is called three-way tabulation. As the number of characteristics increases, the tabulation becomes so complicated and confusing.
5.
| Component | Description |
| Title | Title is a brief and clear explanation of the contains of the table |
| Table Number | A number is assigned to a table for easy identification when many tables are included |
| Date | Date of the creation of the table should be indicated |
| Row Designations | Each row of the table is given a brief name, usually provided in the first column. Such a name is known as a "stub", and the column is known as the "stub column" |
| Column Headings | Each column is given a heading to explain the nature of the figures included in each column. Such names are known as "captions" or "headings". |
| Body of the table | Data is entered into the main body and should be created for easy identification of each data items. Numeric values are often ordered in either ascending or descending order. |
| Unit of Measurement | The unit of measurement of the values in the table body should be indicated. |
| Sources | The tables should provide the primary and secondary sources for the data below the body of the table. |
| Footnotes and References | Addition details for clarifying the contents of the table. |
6.
Tabulation is the process of condensing classified data in the form of a table so that it may be more easily understood, and so that any comparison involved may be more readily made. - D. Gregory and H. Ward
It is a medium of communication of great economy and effectiveness for which ordinary prose is inadequate. In addition to its formation in simple presentation, the statistical table is also a useful tool of analysis. -D. W. Paden and E. F. Lindquist
In classification, data are separated and grouped based on a property of the data common to all values.
• In tabulation, data is arranged into columns and rows based on characteristics/properties, or indicators.
• Tabulation often emphasize on the presentation aspects of the data, while classification is used as a means of sorting of data for further analysis.
