(i) Used in bleaching cotton, Wood pulp, clothes.

(ii) Used as oxidising agent in chemical industries.

(iii) Used as disinfectant to kill germs in drinking water.

The chemical formula of baking powder is sodium hydrogen carbonate \((NaHCO_3).\) while, that of washing soda is sodium carbonate carbonate on heating gives \(CO_2\) gas which will turn lime water milky whereas no such gas is obtained from sodium carbonate.

The student adds turmeric to the two beakers. The basic solution turns the turmeric into reddish-brown in basic solution. On the other hand, she added few drops of phenolphthalein solution to the beakers. If a colourless substance is produced, the substance is acidic and if a pink colour is produced, the solution said to be basic.

Egg shells contain calcium carbonate When nitric acid is added to it, carbon dioxide gas is evolved. The reaction can be given as
\(CaCO_3+2HNO_3\rightarrow Ca(NO_3)_2+H_2O+CO_2\)

The acid present in ant sting is methanoic acid (formic acid). The chemical formula is HCOOH. To get relief one should apply any available basic salt such as baking soda \((NaHCO_3)\) on it.
