The two main domains of interest in Physics are macroscopic and microscopic. The macroscopic domain includes the study of Phenomena involving objects offinite size, this makes up classical Physics, developed upto the year 1900. The microscopic domain includes the study of Phenomenon involving molecules, atoms, nuclei, electron and other. elementary particles. This makes up modern physics developed after the year 1900. Overall Physics has played a key role in the development of many other branches of science.

Physics is a basic discipline in the category of natural sciences. It refers to the study of the physical world and it is devoted to the study of nature and natural phenomenon. In the study of physics, there are two principal thrusts: unification and Reductionism. Unification means attempt to explain the diverse physical phenomenon in terms of a few concepts and laws, while reductionism attempt to derive the properties of a bigger, more complex system from the properties of its constituent simple parts.

Physics has revealed that all the forces occuring in different contexts arise from a small number of fundamental forces in nature. Though the origin of derived forces is complex, yet they can be understood in terms of the fundamental forces which govern the macroscopic as well as microscopic world. These fundamental forces are gravitational force, weak nuclear forces, electromagnetic forces, strong nuclear forces. Among these gravitational and electromagnetic forces have some common characteristics like being central, conservative, long range and obeying inverse square law while weak nuclear forces and strong nuclear forces are of nuclear origin, microscopic and very short range attractive forces. All these forces govern the diverse phenomena of physical world.

(i) Classical Physics includes subjects like mechanics, Thermodynamics, electrodynamics and optics.
(ii) The classical Physics is inadequate to handle the microscopic domain where we deal with the constitution and structure of matter at the minute scales of atoms, nuclei etc.
(iii) Quantum theory is currently accepted as the proper framework for explaining microscopic domain.
(iv) Thermodynamics deals with the study of gaseous system, the changes in termperature, internal energy and entropy of the system. In this mode of transfer of heat, efficiency of heat engine and refrigerators are also included.
(v) Theories in Physics often make use of mathematical concepts. Mathematics has infact served as powerful tool in the development of modern theoretical Physics.

(i) The word 'physics' originated from the Greek word 'Fusis ' meaning nature. Its sanskrit equivalent is 'Bhautiki' that refers to the study of the physical world.
(ii) Some physical phenomena which account to Newton's laws of gravitation are
(i) fall of an apple to the ground (ii) motion of planets around the sun (iii) motion of satellites around the planets.
(iii) Maxwell's equations explain all the electric and magnetic Phenomena.
(iv) Macroscopic quantities like temperature, entropy is related to the average kinetic energy of the molecules of the system. Therefore thermodynamics reductionise to Kinetic theory and statistical mechanics.
(v) These are: Mechanics, Heat and thermodynamics, Electromagnetism, Optics, and Modern physics.
(vi) Physics is a branch of science which deals with the study of nature and natural Phenomena.

(i) The relative strengths of four types of basic forces in nature are as follows FG : Fw : Fg : FN = I : 1025 : 1036 : 1038
(ii) Weak nuclear forces act during the emission of β-decay. These are electrons emitted from a radioactive nucleus when a neutron in the nucleus is converted into a proton and an electron. In this along with electron, uncharged particle anti neutrino is also emitted.
(iii) Field particle of gravitational forces are called graviton while that of electromagnetic forces are photon. These carry no charge and zero rest mass. Exchange of these field particles between two bodies explains how the two bodies intract from a distance.
(iv) According to inverse square law force acting between two interacting bodies is inversely proportional to square of distance between them.
(v) Weak nuclear forces have very short range of the order 10-16 m. while strong nuclear forces have range in order of 10-15m.
