(i) There are several instances when the media fails to focus on issues which are important for us. For example, Drinking water is a major problem in the country, every year, thousands of people suffer due to lack of safe drinking water. Media does not focus on this issue.

(iii) But it did not reports the demolition of slums in Mumbai at all as the slum dwellers did not pay them.
(iv) As citizens of a democracy, the media has a very important role to play in our lives because it is the media which highlights the burning issues.

1. No, the above two stories are not similar. Although both are related to the closure of factories but information provided in each of them differs. Differences between the two are: According to the report in News of India, closure of factories will lead to clean and green city, whereas report in India daily states that closure of factories will result in loss of livelihoods.
Similarities in both of them are:
Both the reports deal with the protests by owners and workers of the factories. And government is assuring the protestors to relocate the factories somewhere else.
2. News of India reports that the huge pollution is being caused by the factories. The city is becoming India's new business hub, so it is necessary to keep it clean and green. So, instead of protesting, relocation should be accepted by the owners and workers.

People going to work could not do so on time because of huge traffic jams. The owners and workers are protesting (the government's decision to close down polluting factory units. Although the government did take this decision rather hastily, the protestors have known for quite some time that their units are not legal. Moreover, the levels of pollution in the city will be greatly reduced by this closure. Mr Jain a well-known figure in the city said, "With our city gradually becoming India's new business hub, it is important that it be a clean and green city. Polluting factories should be moved. The factory owners and workers should accept the relocation being offered by the government instead of protesting." India Daily Report Closure of factories causes Daily News Service The closure of one lakh factories in the city's residential areas is likely to become a serious issue. On Monday, thousands of factory owners and workers took to the street to strongly protest this closure. They said that their livelihoods would he lost. They say that the fault lies with the municipal corporation because it continued to issue licenses of new factories to be set up in residential areas. They also say that there were no adequate relocation efforts. The owners and workers plan a one-day city bandh to protest against this closure. Mr Sharma, one of the factory owner's? said, "The government says that it has done a lot to relocate us. But the areas they have sent us to have no facilities and have not been developed for the last five years." Ans. Stories in the above two newspapers are similar to a great extent. In my view following are the similarities and dissimilarities between the two: Similarities:
(i) In both the reports, the owners and workers are protesting against the closure of factories done by the government.
(ii) Both the reports say that the protest was violent and strong.
Dissimilarities:
(i) The first report says that the protestors knew well that their units were not legal while the second report says that according to the protestors, it was the fault of the municipal corporation which continued to issue licenses for the set up of new units.
(ii) The first report says that a well-known figure wants that the protestors should not oppose the decision of the government and accept its relocation proposal while the second report says that according to the protestors the relocation proposal made by the government is not viable as the areas where they have been sent to do not have facilities of basic infrastructure.

Technology is the use of science in industry to invent useful things or to solve problems. Cable television and extensive use of the Internet is a recent phenomenon. Technology used by media is dynamic. Print media and electronic media reach a large number of people through the use of certain technologies. Their name is based on type of technology they use.
The dynamic nature of technology helps media to spread its effect to more people with better quality of sound and images. Technology also contributes in changing the way people think.

Most of the people in my neighbourhood use the Internet.

The media is far from independent due to certain reasons:
(i) The government has a control over media:
Due to Censorship a news item, scenes from movies or songs are not shared with public.
During the Emergency 1975-1977 government censored the media.
Government censor the films but it really does not censor media coverage of news.
Despite the absence of censorship on news, most newspapers are unable to provide a balanced story.
(ii) This is due to the control of business houses over the media:
News are given based on the interest of the business houses. 
Media needs money which it gets from advertisements.
It becomes difficult for them to report against those who give advertisements.
So media is not independent due to its business links.
(iii) Need for support for an issue:
Media tends to focus on particular aspect to make story interesting:
Also if they want public support, they focus on one side of the story.

Most newspapers still fail in providing a balanced story-
(i) Researchers in the field of media have said that this happens because business houses control the media. So, it is in the interest of these business houses that only one side of the story is focused.
(ii) Media's continual need for money and its links to advertising means that it becomes difficult for media to report against people who give them advertisements. Media is, thus, no longer considered independent because of its close links to business.
(iii) Apart from this, the media also tends to focus on a particular aspect of a story because they believe this makes the story interesting. Also, if they want to increase public support for an issue, they often do this by focusing on one side of a story
