(b) Describe a chemical test to distinguish between ethanol and phenol.
2.
Explain the mechanism of acid catalysed hydration of an alkene to form corresponding alcohol.
3.
Write steps to carry out the conversion of phenol to aspirin.
4.
Suggest a reagent for the conversion of ethanol into
(i) ethanal and
(ii) ethanoic acid.
5.
How is 1-propoxypropane synthesised from propan-1-ol? Write mechanism of this reaction.
6.
How are the following conversions carried out? (Write the reactions and conditions in each case):
(i) Ethanol to 2-propanol
(ii) Phenol to Acetophenone
7.
Give tha major products that are formed by heating each of following ethers with HI.
(i)
(ii)
(iii)
8.
Show how are the following alcohols prepared by the reaction of a suitable Grignard reagent on methanal?
(i)
(ii)
9.
Give the equations of reaction for the preparation of phenol from cumene.
1.
(a) Acid dehydration of ethanol to ethene: When ethanol is heated with concentrated sulphuric acid at 452K, it undergoes dehydration and ethene is formed.
\({ CH }_{ 3 }{ CH }_{ 2 }OH\overset { { H }_{ 2 }{ SO }_{ 4 },453K }{ \longrightarrow } { CH }_{ 2 }={ CH }_{ 2 }+{ H }_{ 2 }OH\)
Mechanism:
Step 1:Protonation of ethanol to form ethyl oxonium ion:
Step 2:Formation of carbocation (rate determining step):
Step 3: Elimination of a proton to form ethene:
(b) On reaction with FeCl3 phenol gives violet, blue and red colour. While ethanol give no reaction.
2.
ome reactive alkenes undergo direct hydration in the presence of mineral acids which act as catalysts. The addition of water to the double bond takes place in accordance with Markonikoff’s rule.
The mechanism of reaction involves the following three steps:
(i) Protonation of alkene to form carbocation by electrophilic attack of H3O+.
(ii) Nucleophilic attack of water of carbocation.
(iii) Deprotonation to from alcohol.
3.

4.
