2.
Give two reasons for keeping beehives in crop fields during flowering period.
3.
Draw a diagram of a section of a megasporangium of an angiosperm and label funiculus, micropyle, embryo sac, and nucellus.
4.
Differentiate between quiescence and dormancy with reference to seed germination.
5.
Name the various methods by which anther dehisces.
6.
What will be the advantage of making the hybrids into apomicts? Why?
7.
What is micropyle in a seed? Mention its significance.
8.
Why do species with abiotic mode of pollination produce larger number of pollen-grains, when compared to those with biotic pollination?
9.
How many are the cells of tapetum different from the cells of the other wall layers?
10.
Differentiate between coleoptile and coleorhiza.
11.
Why is it necessary to emasculate a bisexual flower in a plant breeding programme? Mention the condition under which emasculation is not necessary.
12.
List the adaptive features of water-pollinated flowers like Vallisneria.
13.
Differentiate between testa and integument.
1.
Bottle gourd is unisexual plant and only plant with female reproductive plant can bear fruits.
2.
Keeping beehives in crop fields during flowering period increases pollination efficiency, it improves yield of crops and honey.
3.
4.
Quiescent seeds can germinate when soaked in water under suitable temperature and in presence of oxygen. Quiescent condition is due to unfavourable factors.
The dormancy of seed is the condition of seed when it fails to germinate even through environmental conditions usually considered favourable for active growth are present. Dormancy is inability of seed to germinate even if conditions are favourable.
5.
1. By Longitudinal introse.
2. By Longitudinal extrose.
3. By Apical pores.
4. Transverse.
6.
In general, the hybrid characters segregate in every generation and are not maintained.
The production of hybrid seed is costly and is too expensive for the farmers.
If the hybrids are made into apomicts, there will be no segregation of characters and seeds can be collected from the plants generation after generation and used for raising the new plants.
7.
Micropyle is the opening left by the integuments at the trip of the ovule; this remains as an opening on the seed coat.
It facilitates the entry of oxygen water during seed germination.
8.
(i) Pollination by abiotic agents (like wind and water) is not precise.
(ii) Many pollen grains fail to reach the stigma of female/bisexual flowers.
(iii) To compensate for the wastage, a large number of pollen grains are produced.
9.
| Cells of tapetum | Cells of other wall layers |
|
They have a dense cytoplasm. They often have more than one nucleus. They do not develop thickenings on their walls. Their function is to nourish the developing pollen grains. |
They do not have dense cytoplasm. They have a single nucleus. They may develop wall thickenings. They help in the dehiscence of the anther and liberation of pollen grains. |
10.
| Coleoptile | Coleorhiza |
|
Coleoptile is the foliaceous sheath that covers the plumule in the embryo of cereals. It belongs to the shoot system. |
Coleorhiza is the covering of the radicle in the embryo of cereals. It belongs to the root system. |
11.
1.Emasculation is necessary to prevent the self-pollen grains falling on the stigma.
2. Emasculation is not needed when the female parent chosen bears unisexual, i.e. female flowers.
12.
(i) In Vallisneria, the male flowers are released on the surface of water and female flowers reach the surface by the long stalk.
(ii) Pollen grains are protected from wetting by a mucilaginous covering.
13.
| Testa | Integument |
|
Testa is the outer covering of a seed. |
It is the protective covering of ovule. |
