Take MCQ Biology Test1.
Are pollination and fertilisation necessary in apomixis?
2.
Some plants have a mechanism of shedding of pollen before maturation of stigma. Why?
3.
Name the organic materials of which exine and intine of angiosperm pollen grains are made up of. Explain the role of exine.
4.
Name the parts of pistil which develop into fruits and seeds
5.
Which is the triploid tissue in a fertilized ovule? How is the triploid condition achieved ?
6.
What is the function of two male gametes produced by each pollen grain in angiosperms?
7.
Which are three cells found in pollen grain when it is shed at the three called stage?
8.
Are parthenocarpy and apomixis different phenomena? Discuss their benefits.
9.
What are the functions of the two male gametes produced by each pollen grain in angiosperms?
1.
No, pollination and fertilisation are not necessary in apomixis. It is a form of asexual reproduction that mimics sexual reproduction. It is the formation of seeds without fertilisation.
2.
The strategy of shedding of pollen before maturation of stigma is to prevent self-fertilisation and reduce inbreeding depression. Such mechanisms facilitate cross-pollination and produce genetically better yielding crops.
3.
The exine layer is made up of sporopollenin and intine is made up of cellulose and pectin material.
Exine layer protects the pollen from adverse environmental condition.
4.
The parts of pistil which develop into fruits and seed are ovary and ovules, respectively.
5.
Endosperm is the triploid tissue formed by primary endosperm nucleus containing cell resulting from the fusion of secondary nucleus of one of the male gamete of pollen grain.
6.
One male gamete fuses with egg to form zygote and other fuses with secondary nucleus to form primary endosperm nucleus
7.
One tube cell and two male gametes.
8.
Parthenocarpy and apomixis are two different phenomena.
(i) Parthenocarpy is formation of fruit without fertilisation of the ovary; hence they are seedless.
(ii) Apomixis is the phenomenon of formation of seeds without fertilisation apomictic embryos are genetically identical to the female parent.
9.
One male gamete fuses with the female gamete (syngamy) to form the zygote. Another male gamete fuses with the polar nuclei (triple fusion) to form the primary endosperm.
