Take MCQ Chemistry Test

1.
Write the name of a cell used in small watches.
2.
Why does zinc react with dilute sulphuric acid but copper does not?
3.
Define electrochemical series . or two applications of electrochemical series.
4.
Given that the standard electrode potentials \(\left( { E }^{ 0 } \right) \) of metals are :
\({ K }^{ + }/K=-2.93V,{ Ag }^{ + }/Ag=0.80V,\) \({ Cu }^{ 2+ }/Cu=0.34V,{ Mg }^{ 2+ }/Mg=-2.37V\) \({ Cr }^{ 3+ }/Cr=-0.74V,{ Fe }^{ 2+ }/Fe=-0.44V\)
Arrange these metals in an increasing order of their reducing power.
1.
Mercury cell (Rubon-Mallory cell).
2.
Zinc lies above hydrogen whereas copper lies below hydrogen in the electrochemical series. Hence, zinc is more reactive than H+ whereas copper is less reactive. Therefore, zinc reacts with dilute H2SO4 but copper cannot liberate H2 gas by reaction with dilute H2SO4
3.
The arrangement of various electrodes in the decreasing or increasing order of their standard reduction potentials is called electrochemical series.
or Two applications of electrochemical series are :
(i) To compare oxidizing or reducing powers of different elements
(ii) To predict the spontaneity of any redox reaction.
4.
Higher the oxidation potential more easily it is oxidised and hence stronger is the reducing power. Therefore order is Ag < Cu < Fe < Mg < K.
