In a presentation a slide is an electronic page that contains information about the presentation topic.

Slide layouts are pre-packaged layouts which contain formatting, positioning, and placeholders for all of the content that appears on a slide. Placeholders are the containers in layouts that hold such content as text, tables, charts, SmartArt graphics, movies, sounds, pictures, and clip art.

A presentation is a sequential collection of slides in which each slide displays some information in the form of text or graphics.

In built the openoffice impress consists of 12 different layout of slides.

Impress is OpenOffice.org's presentations (slideshow) module. You can create slides using Impress It contains different elements like text, bulleted and numbered lists, tables, charts, clip art and a range of graphics objects. Impress has access to the spelling checker and thesaurus. Also, it comes with prepackaged text styles, background styles with online help.

Changing font:
(i) Choose format  styles and formatting or press F11.
(ii) Select the style category by clicking on either the presentation styles icon or the Graphic Style icon at the top of the style and formatting window.
(iii) Right - Click on style to be modified and select modify from the pop menu.

While rehearing, use the slide Timing feature to record the time that needed to present each slide and then use the recorded time to advance the slides automatically when the presentation shows to actual audience. The slide timing feature is ideal for creating a self-running presentation: If also make sure that the presentation fits within a certain time frame. columns.

Normal view is the main view for creating individual slides.
(i) Use this view to format and design slides and to add text, graphics and animation effects.
(ii) There are two ways to place a slide in the Slide Design area of the Normal view: clicking the slide thumbnail in the Slides pane or using the Navigator.

Slide Sorter view shows a thumbnail of each slide in order. Use this view to rearrange the order of slides, produce a timed slide show, or add transitions between selected slides.
Significance :
(i) Slide sorter view provides the user with the ability to select several slides at one time.
(ii) Once selected, transitions or other effects can be applied to the slides with fewer keystrokes than if the slides were displayed individually.
(iii) In addition to slide sorter view, power point, allows normal and slide show views.
(iv) Slide show view presents slides one at a time in full screen format, similar to the finished presentation.

Several people make use of the presentation software while giving presentations, some examples are as follows.

Using Empty presentation
(i) Select Empty presentation under Type. It creates a presentation from scratch.
(ii) Click Next. The Presentation Wizard step 2 appears.
(iii) Choose a design under Select a slide design. The slide design section gives you two main choices: Presentation Backgrounds and Presentations.
(iv) Each one has a list of choices for slide designs. If you want to use one of these other than the < Original > , click it to select it. The preview of the same will be shown in the preview pane.
(v) < Original > is an empty background. You can also select among three predefined Presentations: < Original > , Introducing a New Product, and Recommendation of a Strategy.
(vi) Click an item to see a preview of the slide design in the Preview window.
(vii) Select how the presentation will be used under Select an output medium. Generally, presentations are created for computer screen display, so select Screen option.
(viii) Click Next. The Presentation Wizard step 3 appears. In this step, you can choose the desired slide transition from the Effect drop-down menu. Select the desired speed for the transition between the different slides in the presentation from the Speed drop-down menu. Medium is a good choice. Click Create. A new presentation is created.
