Cattles are classified into three groups based on the purpose they serve to man.
1. Dairy breeds or Milch breeds: They are high milk yielders with extended lactation. Eg: Sindhi, Gir, Sahiwal, Jersey, Brown Swiss, Holstein cattle.
2. Draught purpose breeds: Bullocks are good for draught purpose. Eg: Kangayam, Malvi.
3. Dual Purpose breeds: Cows are meant for yielding more milk and bullocks are used for better drought purpose. Eg: Ongole, Hariana.
9.
1 Lac cut from the host plant is called 'Stick lac'.
2. The lac present on the twig is scraped and collected.
3. After grinding, the unnecessary materials like dusts and fine particles are removed.
4. The resultant lac is called 'seed lac'.
5. The seed lac is sun dried and then melted to produce 'shellac'.
Uses:
1. It is used as sealing wax.
2. It is used as filling material for gold ornaments.
3. It is used in preparation of shoe and leather polishes.
10.
Economic importance of Silk:
1. Silk fibers are utilized in preparing silk clothes. Silk fibers are now combined with other natural or synthetic fibers to manufacture clothes like Teri-silk, Cot-silk etc.
2. Silk is dyed and printed to prepare ornamented fabrics. They are generally made from Eri-silk or spun silk.
2. Silk is used in industries and for military purposes.
3. It is used in the manufacture of fishing fibers, parachutes, cartridge bags, insulation coils for telephone, wireless receivers, tyres of racing cars, filter fibres, in medical dressings and as suture materials.
11.
Advantages of Vermicomposting:
1. Vermicompost is rich in essential plant nutrients.
2. It improves soil structure texture, aeration, and water holding capacity and prevents soil erosion.
3. Vermicompost is a rich in nutrients and an ecofriendly amendment to soil for farming and terrace gardening.
4. It enhances seed germination and ensures good plant growth.
12.
Drilosphere is the part of the soil influenced by earthworm secretions, burrowing and castings.
13.
1. Aquaponics may also prevent toxic water runoff.
2. It also maintains ecosystem balance by recycling the waste and excretory products produced by the fish.
14.
It is an agro-based industry comprising three main components:
1. Cultivation of food plants for the silkworms.
2. Rearing of silkworms.
3. Reeling and spinning of silk.
15.
16.
17.
Trees on which Lac insect grow
1. Acacia catechu [Karanagalli]
2. Schleichera oleosa [Kumbadiri]
18.
Economic importance of prawn:
(i) Prawn is a very tasty proteinaceous food.
(ii) Economic growth can be achieved by prawn at a low cost.
(iii) It is profitable to cultivate prawns in fresh water at a low cost.
(iv) By Exporting prawns can also bring a lot of foreign currency to the country.
19.
(i) The drone is the functional male member of the colony.
(ii) The sole duty of the drone is to fertilize the virgin Queen hence called "King of the Colony"
(iii) During swarming the process of leaving the colony by the Queen with a large group of worker bees to form a new colony the drones follows the Queen, copulates and dies after copulation.
20.
(i) A well developed honeybee colony consists of the Queen, Drones and workers.
(ii) There is normally one Queen, 10,000 to 30,000 workers and few hundred drones in a colony.
(iii) They depend on each other for existence.
21.
(i) Water is conserved because no need of water discharge and recharge as the water is maintained by recycling process
(ii) Bottom soil may be loaded with fresh water
(iii) Microbes in water can convert the wastes into usable forms like ammonia into NO3- which are in turn used by plants for the synthesis of proteins
(iv) Soil fertility increases
(v) Utilization of pesticides can be avoided
(vi) Growth of weeds is arrested
(vii) Plants utilize more nutrients available
(viii) Plants wastes and decayed plant
(ix) Parts are being used as food for fishes
(x) Fertilizers can be minimum used
(xi) The cultivable fishes like tilapia, trout, koi, gold fish, bass etc are cultured in aquaponics
(xii) The common cultivable plants like tomato, pepper, lettuce, cucumber and rose are co-cultivated in this method.
22.
There are various techniques adopted in cattle breeding.
1. Inbreeding:
i. Breeding between animals of the same breed for 4-6 generations is called inbreeding. Inbreeding increases homozygosity and exposes the harmful recessive genes.
ii. Continuous inbreeding reduces fertility and even productivity, resulting in "inbreeding depression" .
iii. This can be avoided by breeding selected animals of the breeding population and they should be mated with superior animals of the same breed but unrelated to the breeding population. It helps to restore fertility and yield.
2. Outbreeding:
(i) The breeding between unrelated animals is called outbreeding.
(ii) Outbreeding helps to produce new and favourable traits, to produce hybrids with superior qualities and helps to create new breeds. In outbreeding, there are another steps also involved.
i. Outcrossing:
It is the breeding between unrelated animals of the same breed but having no common ancestry. The offspring of such a cross is called outcross. This method is suitable for breeding animals below average in productivity.
ii. Crossbreeding: Breeding between a superior male of one breed with a superior female of another breed. The crossbred progeny has superior traits.
iii. Interspecific hybridization : Method of breeding between male and female of two different species. For eg male donkey is crossed with female horse the offspring is called as mule.
3. Artificial insemination:
(i). Another breeding method is Artificial insemination is a technique in which the semen collected from the male is injected to the reproductive tract of the selected female.
1. It is economical low cost.
2. No semen are wasted.
3. Cross breeding and outbreeding are favourable in this method.
