Nucleophiles which can attack through two different sites are called ambident nucleophiles. For example, cyanide group is a resonance hybrid of two contributing structures and therefore it can act as a nucleophile in two different ways:

It can attack through carbon to form cyanides and through nitrogen to form isocyanides or carbylamines.

(i) The chloro-fluoro derivatives of methane and ethane are called freons.
(ii) Freon is represented as freon-cba

The reaction of methane with excess of chlorine in the presence of sunlight give carbon tetrachloride as major product

Chloroform reacts with aliphatic or aromatic primary amines and alcoholic caustic potash to give foul smelling alkyl isocyanide (carbylamine)
