Questions + Answers key
Take MCQ Chemistry Test1.
Why does water show high boiling point as compared to hydrogen sulphide? Give reasons for your answer.
2.
Life underneath frozen lakes survive even bitter winter. Justify.
3.
How will you classify water based on the spin of the nuclei of the hydrogen atoms?
4.
Explain the consequences of high enthalpy of H-H bond in terms of chemical reactivity of dihydrogen.
5.
At room temperature, Hydrogen reacts very slowly. Explain
1.
Water has high boiling point due to strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding which is absent in hydrogen sulphide.
2.
Unlike most liquids, water has a unique property of expanding when it freezes. This expansion allows life within water to survive the winter.
3.
Like hydrogen, water can also be classified into ortho-H2O, in which the spin directions of the nuclei of the hydrogen atoms are parallel, and para-H2O, in which the directions are antiparallel.
4.
The high enthalpy of H-H bond makes it a unreactive gas at room temperature. However at high temperature or in the presence of catalyst it combines with metals and nonmetals to form the respective metal hydrides.
5.
In elementary state, Hydrogen exists as a diatomic molecule. The bond between two hydrogen atoms H-H is covalent. The bond dissociation energy is very high (435.9 Klmol-1 ). So bond cleavage is extremely difficult, so hydrogen is less reactive at room temperature.
