Vital capacity is _____.
TV + IRV
TV + ERV
RV + ERV
TV + IRV + ERV
2.
CO2 is transported through blood to lungs as _____.
carbonic acid
oxyhaemoglobin
carbamino haemoglobin
carboxy haemoglobin
3.
During inspiration, the diaphragm _____.
expands
unchanged
relaxes to become domed-shaped
contracts and flattens
4.
The Oxygen Dissociation Curve is ______.
sigmoid
straight line
curved
rectangular hyperbola
5.
The respiratory structures of insects are _____.
tracheal tubes
gills
green glands
lungs
6.
7.
Why is pneumonia considered a dangerous disease?
8.
How the body make long term adjustments when living in high altitude.
9.
Resistance in the airways is typically low. Why? Give two reasons.
10.
Which structure seals the larynx when we swallow?
11.
Name the respiratory organs of flatworm, earthworm, fish, prawn, cockroach and cat.
12.
Explain the conditions which creates problems in oxygen transport.
13.
Diffusion of gases occurs in the alveolar region only and not in any other part of the respiratory system. Discuss
14.
Air moving from the nose to the trachea passes through a number of structures. List in order of the structures.
1.
(d)
TV + IRV + ERV
2.
(c)
carbamino haemoglobin
3.
(d)
contracts and flattens
4.
(a)
sigmoid
5.
(a)
tracheal tubes
6.
(b)
7.
Pneumonia is considered a dangerous disease because,
(i) It affects the respiratory system and causes shortness of breath. In severe cases it affects the oxygen, carbon dioxide exchange in the alveoli. This may lead to hypoxia (decrease of oxygen). Finally death also can happen.
(ii) Pneumonia causes cough and spread of infectious organism in air. This will lead to infection of other people nearby. Thus it will spread easily and affect many.
8.
Body makes long term adjustments when living in high altitude because in high altitudes the O2 content is low in atmosphere and by increasing more production of RBCs the adjustments of respiration are brought.
9.
(i) Entry of air with high pressure may collapse the tracheal tree.
(ii) The smooth muscles which contract and relax to adjust the diameter of air passage with a typical resistance against airways under normal pressure.
10.
(i) A thin elastic flap called epiglottis is found in the upper respiratory tract.
(ii) It prevents the food from entering into the larynx.
(iii) It avoids choking of food.
11.
| S.No. | Animals | Respiratory organs |
| 1. | Flatworm | Skin or body surface |
| 2. | Earthworm | Moist skin |
| 3. | Fish | Gills |
| 4. | Prawn | Gills |
| 5. | Cockroach | Trachea |
| 6. | Cat | Lungs |
12.
Conditions which create the problems in O2 transport:
(i) Poor ventilation.
(ii) Less quantity of haemoglobin.
(iii) Anaemia
(iv) Histotoxic conditions of tissue fluid.
(v) Inability for the transport of O2 into cell due to cellular disorder.
13.
(i) The alveolar regions of lungs are the centres of gaseous exchange for the association of Hb and O2 to form HbO2 and for the dissociation of HbCO2 into Hb and CO2.
(ii) But visceral regions of gaseous exchange constitute tissue fluids where dissociation of HbO2 into Hb and O2 and association of Hb and CO2 into HbCO2 occurs.
14.
External nostrils → Nasal cavity → Internal nostrils → Nasopharynx → Larynx → Trachea → Bronchi → Bronchioles → Hilum → Lungs → Bronchioles → Alveoli
