The most remarkable feature of Dalton's atomic theory was that of atomic mass.Since determining atomic mass of an individual atom was a difficult task, the relative atomic, masses were determined using the laws of chemical combinations and the compounds formed.In 1961, carbon-12 isotope was chosen as the standard reference for measuring atomic masses.It says that one atomic mass unit is a mass unit equal to exactly 1/12th the mass of one atom of carbon-12 Since experimentally t was observed that 3g cabon-12 combines with 4g of oxygen to form CO, further 4g sulphur combines with 4g oxygen to form SO2

(a) CCarbon combines with 4/3 times it mass of oxygen, so atomic mass of oxygen atom is \({4\over3}\times{12\over1}=16u\) Now since equal masses of sulphur and oxygen molecule combine to form SO2, atomic mass of sulphur is 16 x 2 = 32u.
(b) In earlier times, in the absence of weights, things were sold with reference to some other small substance.It was not successful because different people used different substance as reference material.

Ice at 273 K has less energy than water (although both are at the same temperature). Water possesses the additional latent heat of fusion. Hence, at 273 K, ice is more effective in cooling than water.

(ii) Activity Take little amount of water in three containers which have different surface areas. Keep hem in sunlight for 2 h. Measure the volume of water left in all three containers.
Observation The amount of water left will be least in container having largest surface area among them.
Conclusion Greater the surface area, more will be the rate of evaporation.
