Indian Union:
Indian Union refers to the Federation of India, comprising 29 States and 7 Union Territories.
Indian Mainland:
Indian Mainland refers to the continuous stretch of landmass from Jammu and Kashmir to Kanyakumari and from Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh (29 states)

India is situated in the Eastern hemisphere. It stands on the northern edge of the Indian Ocean. Japan in the north-east, Australia in the south-east, Europe in the north-west and Africa in the south-west are almost at equal distance from India.
(i) The trans Indian-Ocean routes connecting the countries of Europe in the west and the developing countries of Asia in the east provide a strategic central position to India.
(ii) Deccan Peninsular protrudes into the Indian Ocean. It helps India to establish close contract with West Asia, Africa and Europe from the western coast and with South-east and East Asia from the eastern coast. India has the longest coast line on the Indian Ocean. No other country has such a coast long line.

1. The sun rises in the east. Hence, time is ahead by four minutes every meridian while going towards east from the west. Kuchchh in Gujarat is located at the eastern point of Arunachala Pradesh. Thus, the differences is of two hours.
2. But the local time longitude is taken as standard time throughout the country and all the watches in the country run according to this time. It is called IST.
3. It is because of this reason that Sun rises two hours earlier in the eastern parts of Arunachal Pradesh as compared to Kuchchh in the west but the watches show the same time.

India's neighbours are Pakistan,  Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Chinna, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Maldives.
India shares its land boundaries with:
(i) Pakistan and Afghanistan in the northwest.
(ii) Chinna, Nepal, Bhutan in the north.
(iii) Myanmar and Bangladesh in the east.
(iv) Our southern neighbours across the sea are two island countries ie., Sri Lanka and Maldives.
(v) Sri Lanka is separated from India by a narrow channel of sea formed by the Palk Strait and Gulf of Mannar.
(vi) Maldives islands are situated to the south of the Lakshaweep islands.
