Questions + Answers key
Take MCQ Science Test1.
A piece of aluminium of mass 0.5 kg is heated to 100ºC and then placed in 0.4 kg of water at 10ºC. If the resulting temperature of the mixture is 30ºC, what is the specific heat capacity of aluminium? (SHC of water = 4,200J/KgºC)
2.
Define specific latent heat capacity
3.
What is specific heat capacity?
4.
Differentiate convection and radiation
5.
Ice is kept in a double-walled container. Why?
1.
Given:
Mass of aluminium mA = 0.5 Kg
Sp. heat capacity of aluminium CA = ?
Change in temperature (\(\triangle \)T)A = (100 - 30)
Mass of water mw = 0.4 Kg
Sp. heat capacity of water Cw = 4200 J/Kg0C
(\(\triangle \)Tw) = (30 - 10)
=200C
Solution:
Heat lost by aluminium = Heat gained by water
MA x CA X (\(\triangle \)T)A = mw x Cw x (\(\triangle \)T)w
0.5 X CA x 70 = 0.4 x 4200 x 20
CA = \(\frac { 0.4\times 4200\times 20 }{ 70\times 0.5 } \)
= \(\frac { 6720 }{ 7 } \)
CA = 960 J/kg0C
Specific heat capacity of aluminium = 960 J/kg0C
2.
Latent heat is the amount of heat energy absorbed or released by a substance during a change in its physical state without any change in its temperature.
3.
Specific heat capacity of a substance is defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 kg of the substance by 1oC.
4.
| S.No | Convection | Radiation |
| 1. | It needs particles for transfer of heat | It does not need particles for transfer of heat. |
| 2. | It lacks in electromagnetic waves | Heat flows from one place to another by means of electromagnetic waves |
| 3. | It flows from higher temperature to lower temperature. |
It occurs in a vaccum. |
5.
To avoid the loss of heat due to conduction, convection and radiation, ice is kept in a double walled container.
