1.
The First World War left a deep impact on the European society and polity:
(i) Soldiers came to be placed above civilians.Politicians and publicists laid great stress on the need for men to be aggressive,strong and masculine.
(ii) The media glorified trench life when the actual truth was, soldiers lived miserable lives in the trenches.
(iii) Aggressive war propaganda and national honour occupied the centre stage in the public life.Popular support grew for conservative dictatorships that had recently come into being.
(iv) Democracy was a fragile idea.It got a setback.It could not survive the instabilities of interwar Europe.

Formation of Weimer Republic:|
(i) The defeat of Germany in the World War I and consequent abdication of the Emperor gave opportunity to parliamentary parties to recast German polity.
(ii) The National Assembly which met at Weimer establish a democratic constitution with a federal structure.
(iii) Deputies were elected to the Reichstag(German Parliament) on the basis of equal and universal votes east by all adults including women.
