(a) One of basic principles of democracy is Universal Adult Franchise. However, in early days of the expansion of democracy, all the citizens were not given the right to vote. In most of the countries women were not given voting rights.
The main reason for this was that women in most of the countries were themselves not interested in it. They preferred to do household work and did not want to be involved in politics. But with the spread of education and political awakening, women started demanding equal political rights and started struggles for it. As a result most of the countries had to concede this demand. In USA women were given the right to vote in 1918 and in UK universal adult franchise was adopted in 1928. Now women have been given voting rights in most of the democratic countries.
(b) By the time India got freedom, the framers of our Constitution firmly believed in giving equal right to all men and women, they adopted the principle of universal adult franchise in their new constitution. In our country, women did not have fight for it.

(i) People could not choose or change  their rulers.
(ii) people did not enjoy the freedom to express their opinion, form political association and organize protests and political action.
(iii) People did not have the right to form independent trade unions and to strike.
