The following points state outcomes of elections in India
(i) The ruling parties routinely lose elections in India both at the national and state levels.
In fact in every two out of the three elections held in the last fifteen years, the ruling party lost.
(ii) Candidates who are known to have spent a lot of money on 'buying votes' and those with known criminal connections often lose elections.
(iii) Barring very few disputed elections, the electoral outcomes are usually accepted as 'people's verdict' by defeated party.
So, considering the above points, it is truly said that one final test of the free and fairness of election lies in the outcome itself.

These include:

(v) Smaller parties and independent candidates suffer a huge disadvantage compared to bigger parties.

Some of the unfair practises are as follows:
(i) Inclusion of wrong names and exclusion of names in the voters' list;
(ii) Misuse of government facilities and officials by the ruling party;
(iii) Excessive use of money by rich candidates and big parties and bribing voters.
(iv) Distribution of liquors and money to voters.
(v) Use of threat to voters.
(vi) Rigging of votes.

Earlier, instead of EVMs, ballot papers were used. It is a sheet of paper on which the names of the contesting candidates along with the party name and symbol are listed. Voters have to mark or put a stamp on the space beside symbol or on the symbol according to his/her choice of candidate. Only one vote is permitted and so only one choice is possible. Now a days, ballot papers has been changed by EVMs.

In India, an election campaign takes place for a period of two weeks between the announcement of the final list of candidates and the date of polling.
1. During this period, newspaper and television channels are full of election-related news, stories, and debates.
2. Political parties start preparing for elections months before they actually take place.

(iv) The other way is to set up a system where political leader are rewarded for serving the people and punished for not doing so.
