The journey of cricket's progress in India is a long one spanning nearly three centuries.
(i) Initial stages: Cricket as a sport in India was introduced by the British colonialists. In colonial India, it was organized on the principle of race and religion. The first record we have of the game being played in India dates 1721. It was recreational cricket played by English sailors in India.
(ii) Cricket Clubs: The first Indian club, the Calcutta Cricket Club was established in 1792. Through the 18th century, cricket in India was wholly a sport played by British military men and civil servants in all white clubs and gymkhanas.
(iii) First Indian's: The Parsis were the first Indian community to play cricket in India. This was so because they were the first community to adopt western styles and education. They came in close contact with the Britishers because of their interest in trade. They founded the Oriental Cricket Club in Bombay in 1848 and later the Parsi Gymkhana.
(iv) Other Communities and Clubs: The establishment of the Parsi Gymkhana led other Indians to establish clubs based on the idea of religious community. The British did not consider colonial India as a nation. Encouraged by colonists by 1890's, the Hindus and Muslim's were busy gathering funds for a Hindu Gymkhana and an Islam Gymkhana.
(v) Pentagular Tournament: The history of gymkhanas led first class cricket being organised on communal and racial lines. The Quadrangular Tournament which later became Pentangular Tournament because of the participation of five instead of four teams did not represent regions but religious, communities-the Parsis, the Europeans, the Hindus, the Muslims and the Rest.
(vi) Ranji Trophy: The Pentangular Tournament was divisive in nature. To counter it a rival first class tournament on regional lines later renamed Ranji Trophy was established. But it was only after independence (1947) did Ranji Trophy properly replace the Pentangular Tournament.
